Default Speedometer goes off, transmission goes off.

I have a 91' accord ex, automatic transmission. When I'm driving, this problem occurs frequently, the speedo will start to drop to zero, stay at zero. Transmission will drop into neutral until I manually shift it into 2nd. Only available gears are first and second. The odometer does not work aswell while this is happening. The speedo will start to flip around and then stay at current speed, thats when I know the transmission will start to shift again. Then the process happens all over again. The check engine light will also come on every now and again after driving with the problem for awhile. The problem can last anywhere from 2-30 minutes, maybe more we don't drive it much.

Other problem I had was the car wasn't getting spark, got a new distributor hoping that would fix both problems. But only fixed the starting problem. Another thing to note is the car has been exposed to high heat, there was a hose with a leak in it and it wasn't getting any antifreeze to the engine. Thats when this problem started to occur. Please help me and thank you.

Your first problem could be your TCU going bad. That's about the only thing I can think of.

I'm still kinda confused on your second problem. Does the car now start like it's supposed to, but randomly dies and loses spark?

The distributer problem was fixed. . And thank you, I will try to replace the TCU asap. Thank you! .

Edit: TCU = Transmission control module? I can't find anything on Transmission control unit.

Partial problem, when the engine overheated, so did the tranny, the tranny fluid flows through the radiator, the fluid is now toast. Your VSS is also toast, that probably is just an electrical problem, VSS controls speedo and ODO. Go to Jiffy lube and do a tranny flush, you are going to need to spend some money to see if you eventually will need an entire tranny swap, sorry. If the fluid change helps, let us know, if the speedo and ODO keep acting up then that is a seperate problem.
