Default 90 crx si tranny confusion

i am confused about the tranny in my car. its a 90 crx si, and the clutch was sliping in it. So i tore it down and bought an o reilly clutch to replace it with. come to find out it wont fit. the shaft on the tranny has 21 splines and the clutch they sold me only had 20. No big deal. I assumed it was just a tranny from an 88 si, which have 21 splines. so i bought an 88 si clutch kit. the disc fit fine, but the pressure plate wont fit the flywheel. its too small. so i reused the old pressure plate. what the hell is wrong? what kind of tranny would require a disc from an 88 and a plate from a 90 model?

Clutch plates are transmission dependent.
Pressure plates are clutch size and flywheel size dependent.

If you want to use the 88 style-clutch with the larger flywheel, you will need to use the larger pressure plate from the older Accords.

Sorry if that sounds disjointed, 4 hours of sleep with too many tests in between have rotted my brain stem.

Now that I'm slightly more awake.

88 Had the odd number of splines
89-00 Share the same number of splines.

88-89 Had a 200mm Clutch Disk, 200mm Pressure Plate, and a 200mm Flywheel.
90-00 Had a 212mm " "

Now if you want to use the 88 transmission with the larger flywheel/ pressure plate, good, you just need a clutch plate with the right number of splines, and that comes in the older Accord / Prelude.

i had similar weirdness, just i had a 89 dx with a 88 si tranny with some other flywheel. the pilot bearing was smaller than any pilot tool would allow and the replacement pilot bearing that came with the clutch kit was way too large for my input shaft which had 21 splines it confused the crap out of me. i took a 88 si pilot tool and an s10 pilot tool (dont know what year) and put them together to get the right pilot tool to do my clutch install. somebody really jacked with my rex before i got it. i guess it had the larger flywheel/pressure plate combo in mine, or maybe the other way around i dont know. it was a long process getting it all together thats for sure.
