Default valve tapping noise

i have an ls vtec in my 93 hb with ITR pistons. this morning when i started up the car i noticed that the valves seemed to be making a lot of noise. more than usual at least. so i took it to my engine guy (im really paranoid about engine noise since i blew my b20v up). he said it was my something perportional valves in the head (which is a b16). my head is an 89 and he said that its pretty normal for them (or just some) to go out. he said the replacement parts are about 40 bucks each but that i need like 8 of them. so thats 320 bucks...plus the install.

so...what im thinking is how hard are they to remove. im fairly machanic, and am pretty sure i could do this. does anyone here have a good idea of whats involved...or is there a DIY on this arleady.

he was saying that over time they just get little grooves on them and then they click. im not loosing power right now, and he said its not really hurting anything. but that in maybe 6 months or a year from now its going to get a lot louder. its more annoying that anything i guess so i dont want my ls sounding like ****.

so any help would be greatly appreciated. i hope i got the name of the part right...he told me this morning and it took me like 20 minutes to remember it right now.

oh yeah...what i was thinking was to just take them out and see which ones are bad (cause when you squeeze them you can feel them scrape or click on the side) and just replace the bad one(s) until i have a little more money freed up.

thanks!

They are not called perportional whatevers, they are called the lost motion assemblies. They are little spring like things that sit under the middle rocker arm. There is 8 of them. To replace them you have to remove all of the rocker arms by pulling out the shafts that slide all the way through the head. Then they just pull of with some needle nose pliers. If you are using all motor or high lift camshafts i suggest getting them through acura for the integra type r these are a little stiffer then the ones for the b16 and can handle the power better. Dont forget to adjust your valves since you have to pull the cams out as well. Hope this helps!!
