Default Help- final gearing s20 trans- hybrid?

Hello, I am new here. I have a VTEC mini (yes, an Austin Mini), and my final gearing in my S20 trans is too low due to Mini having weeeeee tires. I currently have an S20 out of a 92-95 del sol with a final drive of 4.2:1 -I believe. Is a hybrid possible? There is the S20 out of the civic CX/VX with a final drive of 3.2:1. I NEED those gears!!! In the mini it's 4000 rpm @ 70 mph in fifth. All my gears are too low. Spins forever... Will I have to change trannys?? HELP!!!

BTW- It has a healthy D16 vtec for an engine. 180 hp... and kinda has a weeee bit of nitrous....(can get it up to 250 hp, but that's scary in a mini)

Thanks in advance for any help, I humbly bow to your prowess.

I don't know if this pic will work:

I have a 3.25 set here. . .

I am not sure if it will swap right in, but I think final drive sets (aftermarket) for d-series work on any case, so it should.

I think more pictures of the car will be needed to be able to fully help.

As long as your ring gear and countershaft are 1992 and up it will work with his tranny.

Thanks for the info, guys.

Sounds great. -Throw in a set of gears and things may be more- normal.

Mr. 743power: If you would like to sell me those gears- let me know your terms.

with the rpms that you stated in 5th gear @ 70mph I take that that you're running a 19" diameter tire.

with your s20 trans, you have the following OEM final drives available in direct swap
3.25, 3.7222, 4.058, 4.25

there is a way of getting the 88-91 cable final drives to work. There's a few exclusive final drives that are available, 2.95 and 3.888 are avail.

si trans, 19" tire 7500rpm redline, gears end at following mph
3.25 final, 40 69 104 144 174
70mph@3000rpm

3.72 final, 35 60 91 125 152
70mph@3450rpm

3.88 final, 34 57 87 120 145
70mph@3600

4.058 final 32 55 84 115 139
70mph @3750

IMo, i'd go with the 3.722 or 4.058

3.888 is a cable final drive and it's a bit trickier to get working. I have a 3.25, 3.722, 3.888 and I'm not sure about the 4.058

if you want the 3.25, it's free + shipping.

it's a very simple swap, no shimming required

Thank you SO much for the great information. All things taken into account I'm leaning towards the 3.25 final gearing. It's great to know that I can do this. My reasons for 3.25: I drive on the freeway a fair bit. 3000 rpm @ 70 mph is very appealing to me. Also- this car is 1500 lbs. Literally. I currently have to baby it through first- I'm willing to chance the milder gears. Maybe I can stomp on it after. It's a fun car to drive- but it is kinda hard to control... It's a TOTAL sleeper, too.

--and yes, 19" dia. tires.

This is great. Thanks guys.

One last question: can anyone please post a link or picture with an exploded view of an s20? Anything would be appreciated. I'm gonna go snoop in Chilton's website- maybe they have...

Many thanks again for all the help.
