One of my friends has rebuilt his 97 Maxima tranny I think 3 times, and he had never done tranny work prior to that. He just had his factory repair manual handy. Just make sure you have backup transportation because I think he spent several days on his tranny the first time he rebuilt it.
Last weekend I help my brother-in-law install a Quaife LSD in his '90 CRX Si (D-series) transmission. The B-series transmission is very similiar to the D-series, so here are the tools that we used.
1. Helms manual
2. metric wrenches and sockets
3. torque wrench
4. snap ring pliers
5. rubber mallet
6. feeler guages (if you will be checking tolerances)
7. Hondabond or Permatex Ultra Gray (same as Hondabond)
This was the first time that either one of use had worked on a transmission, so it took some time to become familiar with disassembling and reassembling the transmission.
When you say that you will be rebuilding the transmission, are you replacing syncros, replacing chipped or broken gears, installing a LSD?

im going to replace the bearings and if all possible, an LSD. i have 2 trannies so down time is not an issue. while im in there, im ging to be looking to see if the syncros need to be replaced. i have never ever cracked a tranny open before and this is going to be my first time. how can i tell if the syncros are bad?

i am swapping tranny cases right now and getting the old bearings out is a pain. i am bring the case to a machine shop to have them pull the old bearings out. so you might need to line up a machine shop for some of the work.
definitely have a helms manual for reference. when ball bearings and springs go flying, you'll want to know where they are supposed to go.

Are you talking about the bearings attached to the diff? I will be opening my tranny soon too. I am collecting parts right now. Just need the LSD, and a few tools. And bearings if I cannot find this bearing seperator that they show in the helms manual.
