My dad told me that since the air is cooler in the winter Lower octane in the winter?
my dad tole me that because of the cool air in winter a high octane is not nescesary for cars thats use it. I didnt knw if he was right or wrong. Is he right or wrong or neithere?
An increase in ambient air temperature of 5.6C increases the octane requirement of an engine by 0.44 - 0.54 MON. When the combined effects of air temperature and humidity are considered, it is theoretically possible to use one octane grade in summer, and use a lower octane rating in winter. The Motor octane rating has a higher charge temperature, and increasing charge temperature increases the tendency to knock, so fuels with low Sensitivity ( the difference between RON and MON numbers ) are less affected by air temperature.
At most we are on the order of only a couple octane for an arbitrary temperature difference of say, 30 degrees Celsius (typical for the northern states, I'd say). If you factor in the use of average RON and MON for octane ratings here in North America (MON is typically higher), the effect of temperature is probably less than that.
Given that the USDM ITR is probably tuned for 91 or 92 octane (R+M/2), and that generally the pump ratings are based on a minimum octane grade (e.g. 89 is AT LEAST 89 R+M/2, if not higher ), I'd say that it's definitely within the realm of possibility that you could move down a grade in cold conditions. Especially since "most" drivers will "take it down a couple notches" in the winter when there is snow and ice around.
That being said, the price between grades is not all that much relatively speaking, so why not give yourself piece of mind if you can afford it, I use Ultra94 exclusively (93 when I travel in the states) myself and don't winter drive my R anyway... so, I guess you could take my post with a grain of salt. I'm only stating the factual information I'm privy to...

I find my car runs leaner in the cold i definetly wouldnt want any preignition at startup with cold parts. I can see rings galling up my cylinder walls or worse. Id say stick with the min you need. On highly tuned cars this could destroy them.

considering he lives in South Carolina, and there are actually 52 weeks in a year, with 4 seasons(at least in the USA), which would be 13 weeks for winter, but SC only sees about 10 of these, it would be about 20 bucks savings. Not worth it IMHO...I agree with the BUDMAN

When you buy a brand new car and roll it off the show room floor and it says "premium fuel only" you can be assured that's what I'm going to put in it.
My car doesn't NEED the factory recommended amount of oil to run either but I sure as heck feel a lot more comfortable with the right amount in there.
