Default Anti-roll bar material?

I was wondering if anyone knew what material manufacturers used for anti-roll bars, both oem and aftermarket

I saw one for a mustang one time that said it was made out of "4140 spring steel cromoly" but i have no idea if that was what it was actually made out of

From most equations i have seen, most people are using the modulus from 1018 or 1020 steel

anyone know?

Are you talking about a roll cage or a sway bar?

I've been on a quest to find out what material OEM manufacturer uses for quite sometime but, I never gotten any solid answers. I think 4140 and 4130 will be be most ideal material to use. But they are expensive and hard to work with even if you anneal them.

Most aftermarket swaybars materials that I'm aware of are made of 1018 CR. They are cheap and easy to work with and just up the diameter until you get the desired stiffness.

Auto manufacturers make form their swaybar while the bars are cherry hot so they have the advantage of using a stiffer material. The aftermarket companies usually can't invest in expensive dies so they are limited on bending the materials cold on hydraulic tube bender.

Please feel free to add or correct any information I stated above.

I am talking about a "sway bar" commenly known as an anti-roll bar, because, thats what it does, reduce body roll.

Anyone else care to chime in?
I would be interested to know what realtime uses on their cars

they used to (and probably still do) use hollow ARBs like these

a spec makes kits for Civics that utilize hollow sway bars. http://www.asrparts.com

not up untill the ran the RSX and TSX did they start running that type of bar. The TSX came out at its first race with one, and some time around then the RSX started useing one also.

On DC2's they ran the comptech bar, or the mugen bar.
