Default Crashing in the rain is fun!

So, I left Richmond early Sunday to head back to DC. In 40 degree weather, 30mph winds, and pouring rain. On a scooter. Made it about 40 miles outside of Richmond, was doing around 50mph, heard a bang, and next thing I knew, the rear tire had gone flat and was locked up. Kept it upright for a bit, then went down like a champ. Both me and the scoot slid to a stop. Jumped up, looked for cars, and pushed the scoot off the road. Pushed it 100 or so feet to a driveway, popped off the cowl, mounted the spare, and did another 120 miles home. My right leg is pretty sore, but thats about it. Looking back, it was kinda silly to keep pushing on, my hands were so numb and cold that at a stoplight in Bealaton I was unable to get going as I couldn't feel enough to pull in the clutch. Learn and live, I suppose.

Ouch! Did you run over a nail on the scoot?

Did you come out of the crash scratch free? Any damage to your scooter? Atleast you lived to write this post. Stay safe

Yep, caught a nail. With my tires having tubes, it's either full of air or nothing, no inbetween or slow flats. No real damage to me, a scratch or two on the scoot, and a bent kickstart lever.

What kind of gear were you wearing? You mentioned that your hands got cold, what kind of gloves did you have on?

I got stuck in that weather on saturday, but it was actually kind of fun. My ride was only from DC to Falls Church though.

Although they didn't have spare tires, the ZRXOA guys I road with last weekend were VERY well prepared for a tire issue. Two of them even carried electric pumps.

It made me re-evaluate my "tool kit" for the commuter.

I did that last winter...but on my 15 minute commute. Hands get cold, hurt, then numb.

Glad you're all right. Did you take rt 1? I thought you'd take 95, until I read the driveway part.

His bike is not permitted on 95 as far as I know.

For gear - I was wearing my A* full leather suit, along with gloves and boots. I left Friday prepared for the cold, but they were not forecasting a day full of rain at that time. The scooter is allowed on 95 - but I am not that stupid (at least with the slow one) - I went out 29 to 522 to 33, a beautiful ride in most cases.

How is it allowed on 95? I thought you needed at least 250cc to get on an interstate.

Nope. Anything below 50cc is restricted, anything above 50cc is a full fledged motorcycle in the eyes of the law. I wouldn't think of driving my 150cc on 95 for any long distance (more than a exit or two) but would have no problem taking the 136cc out there for a trip.

A few months ago Billy Lane was driving drunk and hit a person on a moped killing them.

Better than the front going out! Nice job with the spare.

Billy went over the center line of a two lane highway to try a pass on slower traffic and hit him head-on. I have the same kind of scooter as the guy who got hit, its one of the larger freeway legal kind.

Under 50cc is the "motor assisted cycles" that you see the warning signs for on the onramps, but here in CA there's also a 150cc minimum requirement.
