Some pictures from long ago...
I do not know anything about these cars specs, but I know that a couple of them are pretty famous, like the Castrol Jaguar XJR for example. I have some more pics that I might be able to dig up out of my boxes, I'll see if I can.
I can't remember the exact year of these pictures, but I remember being in elementary school around 1989 or so. My Uncle Bruce took me to Laguna Seca as a kid every chance that he got (usually a few times a year), and always took pictures. These are some of them, sorry about the quality of them. I had to take pics of these original photos with my digital camera lol
I miss the days of going to see these cars race, and getting souvenirs from the pits after the races like used racing slicks haha. I miss the smells at the track, the sound, and the experience of staying there the whole day and being surrounded by all of this. Someday, I'd like to go back to see the Daytona cars and all of the other kind of races again...
Just thought I would post these for you guys to check out.
I am sure that a lot of the older members on here could probably tell us a lot about these cars.

how effective aerodynamically is covering up the rear wheels like that? Wouldn't they direct air moving along the sides of the car into the engine bay/brakes anyways?

The NACA ducts and the periscopes did a sufficient job of directing air where needed. These were (some still are) some of the most aerodynamically advanced race cars that have ever hit a track.

I just found another stack of pics of these cars in my drawer, I'll upload them when I get the chance and add to the first post.
