Essential items for the bike trunk
The criteria I use is for permanent trunk items only. This rules out things that are too expensive (digital camera) or bulky to permanently carry there (water), or things I always carry in my wallet such as ID, proof of INsurance, Medical ID cards and Donor information. I removed the Emergency contacts info from my original list because that needs to be in my wallet too. Water is too ubiquitous to carry all the time unless you know you will need it. I use a camelback in the sumer for weekend rides. (hydrate or die as they say) A tank bag is great too, but only when needed. Remember magnetic tank bags will ruin magnetic media (hard drives/floppies) and credit cards.

Not related to carry items but great ideas:
____________________________________
1) Tell a friend or relative when to be expected back.
2) Discuss your donor wishes with your family.
3) You could hide a spare key somewhere other than the trunk. Wouldn't it suck to trailer your bike 500 miles and forget to pack the key

Disk lock are OK but Id rather have a NY chain. With a disk lock, you can forget them and try to ride off, or bad guys can tote the bike over to the truck and run off with it...
well how about a NY chain and a disc lock
for those times you cant find somewhere to lock up. if you put the disc lock on as close to the caliper as possible it makes forgetting it on there less damaging(i learned that from my cousin..yay)
