i used a shanked style lug with washer this year, but i found something cool.

I found a package from weld that had 5 adapters to make a shanked lug wheel into an acorn style wheel. its just an insert that goes into the wheel.

The only problem is that weld no longer produces this part nor has any information on them. I may go to my local CNC guy and have him cut some for me this offseason. this would allow the use of a lighter lug with bogarts.

thanks brett. i got a set of 5 actually. I'll probably send a couple out to different shops and see who can make a run of 100-200 for the best price.

Drag wheels are drilled like that so you can run shank lugs. They are stronger and safer than tapered lugs. The shank supports the wheel stud and keeps the studs from deflecting under a hard launch. Look for them in Summit or Jegs. You'll see a picture of them.

Yeah, defnitely run the shank lugs over those inserts. They're like that for a reason.

Why did they stop making both those inserts and those wheels?

yeah, i was thinking the same, but i know of a couple racers who just use the acorn lugs on the welds with no problems. making around 700whp.

Well, it's not a good idea, regardless of who's doing it.

(haven't been trying to argue, just trying to give/find info about all this)

what all can happen bad from the lug issue? is it just breaking or bending the stud from the lack of support or what?

All the torque is applied through the stud to the wheel. Have you seen the contact area on those weld adaptors? It's just a safer more secure way to do it with the shouldered lug. I'd imagine it's better for the wheels and the studs.

When you lose your front wheel and crash into the guardwall, you might have to replace some things.

and when a motor blows up you have to replace some things. i dont see how your response answers anything. obviously the lug nut holds the wheel on. my question was what exactly could happen from improper lugs. would they not hold a torque, would they snap a lug, twist a lug, etc.

tony, thanks for the response

It's called sarcasm. Let me dumb it down some more.
The stud is unsupported inside the wheel. It bends every time you launch. One of those times you lose a wheel. Then, bad things happen. Maybe even real bad things. Sorry my Japanese isn't so good.
