Almostttt there.....ok not really.
How did you get the black tar matting off?
I've heard of using a heat gun and a hammer and chisel.
And I've also heard of using dry ice. I just want to take mine out
the easiest .way possible

that's one thing i still gotta do.
i've heard that using CO2 makes the job go much easier. try getting a fire extinguisher filled with CO2. that's what i am gonna try.

Ive stripped my car...but taking out the 'tar' seems like a lot of work for a minimal weight savings...how much did all the "tar" weigh?
I saved weight with my rims, and race seats (almost 35 lbs by putting in new seats, and 20 with 16" kosei's), but put it all back in with my rollcage. Your car looks nice on the inside though...I cant wait for a warm day so I can clean the inside of mine...heh

u know whats funny, i was puttin my battery in my trunk and a while back a bottle of anti freeze spilled all over my trunk, so i pull up on the tar adn the thing came completely off the metal of my car! i mean completely clean off! you could see the shiny bare metal there. I duno if its just me or what but its worth a shot, soak the thing with antifreeze and let it sit on it for a couple days. let it work its way all the way down into it, who knows.

hmm i might have to give this a try since my car is sitting up on jackstands waiting for me to work on it some. and i got lots of antifreeze lying around!
i'll let you all know how it works.
i'm not stripping the tar off for weight, i'm going to repaint the car and think it will look cleaner w/o the tar, yes i'm taking the dash out but just to cut out the frame and anything else i find unnessary
and getting rid of the si seat for a sparco sprint.........

Heh, that looks exactly like my car only mine's yellow:
This is what it looked like after a hot day of scraping. Since I took this picture, I had to really get in there and scrub with a sanding sponge and some 3M adhesive remover, but now it's clean and ready to be painted after the cage goes in (sorry, I don't have a "clean" pic).
BTW, I saved all of the scraps of rubber (well, 95% of it) and it weighed in at about 12 lbs. That doesn't include the thick soft rubber behind the dash or anything, just the tar stuff. NOT worth it for weight savings, but a good idea if you're repainting. Plus, you don't want to install a cage over that crap since you can't weld on it.

When you guys are done, you can start on mine, j/k....seems like to much work for vert little results, i would just make more power to overcome the little wieght of the tar. and looks ghetto unless its full race.
it EASY to do. well worth the savings.
I can see how it wouldn't be worth it if you were heating it up, but with the dry ice, it's a piece of cake.
The weight savings? Can't say for sure, but I would think around 15 lbs. Lets put it this way, I put most of the tar in a regular plastic grocery bag, and the bag handles ripped off, because of the weight. And that was without the small pieces that I sucked up in the vaccuum cleaner.
Really. go for the dry ice, it makes it so much easier. I tried the heat gun scraping method, it was a HUGE pain in the ***. dry ice makes it so easy.
No adhesive remover necessary.

dry ice method seems to work well from those pics. i waited till it was night (cold air) and then bashed the floorboards with a hammer. pieces flaked off. some bends and **** had to be chiseled out, but it was no big deal. only an afternoon in a lieftime of 'em.
Wow that looks like the inside of my rex when I stripped her. It was in the summer time in Texas so it really sucked. Oh yeah, my car was a lot louder after that
hey martini......what did you EXACTLY do when you used the dry ice??? I heard different stories like mixing it with isopropyl and other crazyness...but man they way yours came out, i wanna do it your way! Im doing the chisel&hammer method and its just to much on my back, wrist, ***, hands....arggghh....just too much fer a measly 12 lbs...but i want that 12 lbs outta there!
my girlfren helped me chisel too...and i think she wants to leave me now...

yeah, you look in the yellow pages under "dry ice"..if its not there, call up baskin robbins and ask them where they get thier dry ice.
It comes in these little pellets, someone took a 1/2" diameter rod of the stuff, and cracked it into a bunch of pieces.
You just lay it out over an area of tar, let it sit for a while (~30-45sec) then hit it with a hammer.
