slight squealing when taking off?
Recently I tighten my PS belt because it was so lose it would make a whirlling sound when I would try to turn on my car. Now that I got it tight it starts perfectly.. but this sound starting last night as I try to take off from a stop.. The only thing I did that was a little bad last night I was making a sharp turn and a guy in a jeep with brights on was coming up from that turn and I couldnt see for **** and curbed my right passenger side wheel hard. Other then that I can't think of anything else that would make that sound. I am due past late on replacing my right side CV axle because I took it to the shop and they said I would need it repair asap. The squealing sound is very faint and you can barely hear it.. I am guessing its my powersteering belt or my cv axle?>
That's something your going to have to have a friend walk next to the car while you drive slow past them to see if they can hear where its coming from...you should be able to tell whether or not its coming from the engine.
I've never heard a cv axle "squeel". Just from what you've told us, I would say it's still your PS belt. Check it, and make sure that it isn't too tight. Also, make sure that it hasn't loosened back up. I would check the other belts, too.
Im pretty sure my brake pads are just fine.. I got them replaced when I first got the car.. It didn't make the squeaking sound today when i drove it sooo I guess ...? lol.
If you left the PS belt go too long before tigtening, you might have actually damaged the ribs on the inside of the belt...causing less friction with the pully.
There is a bit of an art to having the correct tension on the PS and Alt/Compressor belts. Either check a buddy's car as a reference, or stop by a garage and get a tech to look at it real quick...and experienced person will know by just touching the belt if you have the correct tension on it.
Another thing to beware is OVERtightening the belt...this will kill a bearing faster than you can imagine (but not overnight).
On a side note...if you had a damage axle/CV...you would most likely hear a clunking sound (especially in tight turns at low speeds)...not a whine.
Cheers!
