Default 90 auto trans wont shift out of first?

New here, so please bear with me. I have a 90 accord that I bought for a parts car. I drove it home, replaced the exhaust and was going to do some body work, but the car wont shift out of first gear! Is there any troubleshooting I can do or is it terminal? TIA

it might be the solenoid but most likely you need a new tranny

Does your S light blinks or stay on? I would recommand unplug your AT ecu and plug it back in.. most likely it's your AT ecu at fault...

'S' lite is in the dash cluster; the Trans Control Unit is under the passenger side front floor carpet.

Okay, I changed the AT ecu and the car is shifting gears but the "S" light in the dash went from staying on to blinking. What is that signal trying to tell me?

Update: I just started the car and let it run, now it wants to rev up and down, while doing this the red light is flashing in the AT ecu! Help!!

Very common on older 90-93 Accords. If the D4 or 'S' light is blinking that is telling you that there is a transmission problem. The blinking light that you see at the trans ecu is specifying a code by the number of blinks. Usually there are 5 or more codes stored, which means you need a trans ecu. My advice to you is to hit the junkyards and see what you find.

BTW I HIGHLY recommend you purchase a Honda service manual if you plan to do any kind of mechanical work to this car.

Okay I replaced the ECU, the car shifted good during a test drive, bolted everything back together, went for another drive and the car wouldnt shift. I unplugged the wires and plugged in the old unit and the car shifted fine! Would there be a grounding problem here?

New problem! Tried two ATU units, same situation, now the car won't stay running!! It will start rev up then start to stall, then quit. It will start right up but does the same thing over and over again. Slowly P*$%ing off.
