Default Welding in a roll cage......

I a freind of mind had a roll cage welding into his 99GSR and he let me have it. He cut it right down the middle in some spots so it could be removed but besides that its good. Needs sand blasting as well. But what I wanted to know is how many ways can I organize the piping. Im trying to leave my dash alone.

here are some pics:

if i were you........i'd take his cage and go to a chassis shop, and have them bend up new bars using those as a template.... no 2 cars are the same...and it'd take some tweaking to fit right anyways............and, then you won't have to worry about it snapping in half at a seam in the middle of a bar

honestly........that just doens't look safe to resuse

I wouldn't reuse that. First off, it won't be legal. On top of that, it will be unsafe. The material portion of the cage isn't the most expensive, its the labor getting it welded in (unless you can weld it yourself). I would just invest in a mild steel kit, or have someone bend up some new tubes. I ordered a rollbar kit from S&W and had my fab guy alter it a bit and weld it in. But all in all, the total investement installed was only $600~

Mine looks good, after the door bars were reshaped, the back bars rebent, and a couple of extra tubes added to complete it...haha

plain and simple they suck, thats my opinion as a shop owner. the fitment is horrible. I guess for the "do it yourself" guy it will work.

I agree, and i'm sure most any chassis guy that bends his own stuff will agree as well. It's not S&W's fault. I'm sure if you had them build you a cage and install it in your car, it would come out nice. When you resort to production stuff, especially cages, you have to take away a bit from the fitment. When we build cages, we can tuck things in as tight as possible for the given situation. That can't happen on a pre fab cage, they're always going to fit "loose" at best.

i agree to an extent... I mean to a novice racer who is just lookin for soemthing to prevent him from being thrown out, its right up their alley.. I personally would always have a chassis guy/shop do mine because im uber-****. Thats why i always have in the past.. Especially sincei dont weld anyways lol.

EDIT: Case in point, looks like THIS guy would be a prime candidate for an S&W kit, if you know what i mean

if you MUST use that cage atleast find a nice thick pipe that will fit over the bars to tie them together..but I would just get a new cage and be done.

...IMO, since you got it for nothing, bring it to the local scrap yard and maybe get something. Since your looking to save some money and do it yourself, get a S&W prefab. You will thank yourself later. ....but its your car and safety.
