11k/9k good enough for DD and autoX?
11k/9k good enough for DD and autoX?
--------------------------------------------------
okay, i drive a 94 ls and my intentions for my car is definatly DD and i want to auto-x a little bit. i know that i will be sacrificing some comfort on the road, but exactly how much comfort? do you guys think 11k/9k is too stiff, for DD? also with this setup, will i be have less understeer?

Less understeer than stock? Probably. You might consider swapping the front/rear springs. I track my DC2 with 12K/10K and it pushes like a hog compared to a reasonably well set up dedicated race car (This is HPDE/race, not autocross). Felt great on the street though, did a couple of long (850 mile) 1-day trips with it like that, no back pain.
No setup is going to be great for DD and autocross. "Good Enough" is going to have a wide variety of definitions too, but yeah it'll be good enough for a relatively uncompetitive car, not built up to a particular class's ruleset.

well, lets take into consideration that i live in chicago and the roads here are pretty shitty; plenty of construction going on, bumps, holes, etc on the road. so my def. of "good enough" is being able to daily drive in these conditions without feeling punished everytime i take my car out.
haha..i just noticed that you also live in chicago too. how does your car ride with the 12k/10k setup when you drive it on the streets?
BTW: what setup do you have?

Omnipower sports. It rides fine. Stay out of the deep potholes, though.

I also have a 94 LS and I run 450f/400r (8k/7k). That's about as stiff as I can stand for street driving, but then I'm old. The amount of over/understeer you experience is going to depend on more than just spring rates. Sway bars, shock settings, toe, camber, tire pressure, and ride height are all going to have an effect.

You can definitely get away with 11 and 9 depending on the factors of the rest of your setup. Sway bar setup, alignment, tire choice, tire pressure, and actual coilover choice are some of those factors. Spring rate feel from one company can vary from another. And youre wondering about experience on various coilovers on the track and streets of Chicago? Ive got plenty of experience with different coilovers and have used them on my 65 mile a day minimal drive to work and back everyday from Chicago to Schaumburg. I might be the guy with the answers youre looking for. Depending on your budget id definitely stay away from these new hyped mad jdm tiiiite coilovers you may be seeing around for cheap nowadays. Try to make sure the coilovers you buy with damping adjustability have the adjustability youre looking for. Ever see a rock skipping over water? That can be your car over bumps with the wrong setup. pm me for more info.

IMHO, I think this would be too stiff for the street. I have 12k/16k in my track 90 LS (TEIN SS coilover, 19 mm rear bar, no front bar). I would not drive this on the street, both for comfort and durability reasons (I would worry about breaking something hitting the unexpected "road condition" in Chicago).
Although, for reference the original TEIN SS kit for the street came with 9k/5k (your application is probably similar).

Since this is the official IL suspension thread, I use 450 lb/in spring front, and 375 rear (~8 and 6.5 kg/mm respectively), which seems to suit DD well. Although, there are times I dream of a smoother ride, as it seems I can feel every road imperfection.
And Chris is correct, any solution you find to DD and auto-x must compromise one for the other.
Finally, it is time to throw out the ubiquitous koni/gc recommendation; get it, love it.

ive had really good expirence autoxing w/ the set up. track is a little different but i dont blame the spring rates
