Banning HID's
I heard on the news today, they ( the gov) might pass a regulation banning HID lights because of the complaints they get for their brightness. Have any of you heard of this?? I don't want this to happen cuz I want HID's when I buy my next car (TL-S).
i dont think it's their brightness, i think it's cuz aftermarket HIDs require autolevelers which non HID equipped cars (such as our tegs) dont have, so many HID beam patterns are directed more into people's eyes than teh ground, which is dangerous, making any vehicle w/o the autoleveler having HIDs illegal.
If the DOT was bright, they would REQUIRE HIDs on all cars and have DOT approved kits to upgrade your current lights with the auot leveler. But just because it will be too expensive and the US DOT doesnt want to keep peopel safe, just give the illusion of safty... they wont do it.

I have only seen a very few select cars around my area w/ aftermarket HID. Most HID lights I see when just driving on the road are cars that came w/ them from the factory. I bet the people that complain would not be complaining if their own cars had HID and they could see the road better. Maybe it's just a ploy from those who can't afford them... they can't have them so they don't want other people to have them either.

I target the Civics especially because they do not have projector lenses and it is more difficult to retro HID into a reflector headlight assembly. They do not make custom glare shields or retro fit projectors. At times I am ashamed to say that I am part of the import community

ban HID's.. i can see if they ban them on taller vehicles(like SUVs).. maybe they'll let us all have window tint instead of banning HID's..
a brighter light is better for visibility and less accidents.. if people complain about the HID's they should:
1. not look directly into them
2. turn the little switch on the mirror(dim)
u know if they have a proposition about that on the ballot make sure to get all your friends out to vote against it..

Nope, In Toronto, there are lots of ricey civics with HID. The owners just swap in the HID bulbs and do not care about glare and blinding on coming drivers. They are the ones who will force legislation to ban HID's.

I think American drivers are just wimps (virtually present company excepted heh)
I mean, look at American DOT lighting standards vs. European ECE standards. The optics of headlight housings in euro-spec cars are much more efficient than USDM cars. I remember reading info on a couple of sites about DOT vs. ECE but I can't remember the sites.

I think those are just the bulbs you are talking about ...not real hid... PIAA, EUROLITE, EAGLELITE etc. are not real hid...

Yeah I read that article in the USA Today on Monday about banning HID's. There are even people who own cars with HID's that are complaining that they're too bright and cause temporary blindness. The whole issue is being contemplated. There have been thousands of complaints, and these "tranportation officials" say that these complaints cannot be ignored. We'll have to wait and see. All I can say is, buy your HID kits now before they take them off the shelves!!!

I can't say that I know what an "auto leveler" is, but I would think HIDs would be much safer on cars that have properly aimed projector headlights (such as Tegs) because the light is directed a lot better than normal headlights.
I did a 9005 conversion for my low beams, and the light output is quite a bit brighter (70%) than stock, but it doesn't blind other drivers. I've had cops try to hassle me about a lot of petty things, but they have never said anything at all about my headlights. But, if you were to boost the light output that much on a car with regular headlights, I would expect that you would very easily blind people. Most regular headlights just use a dual filament bulb that serves as both the low and high beams, and the high beams only illuminate a larger area because they put out more light. If you swapped those bulbs with HIDs, it would be no different than driving around with your brights on, and you'd likely get the same ticket too.
I don't see any reason for them to make any new laws about this. It's my understanding that if your car blinds other drivers, then it's not legal to drive it like that.

My dad hates HID's and is always complaining saying that they should make them illegal. I personally love them, but I'm sure everyone on this board does, so..... I don't think they will be banned, but I wouldn't be suprised if they did propose stricter laws reguarding the use and installation of them as an aftermarket item.

Those look clean crazy, real clean. I agree, HIDs should be on projector headlamp cars like the teg, beamer, etc. The beam is more focused. Either that, or kits should be adjusted so they don't point in peoples eyes.
