Default Ball Joint Interchangeability

So I purchased some used EX knuckles and I was looking to refurbish them to minty freshness, and that includes changing the ball joint on the knuckle. Now I know that EG/EK/DC Balljoints share a part number that is different from the EF, but what is the real difference in the balljoints? It'd be nice to save 10$ a side if at all possible.

1991 Civic EX - 51220-SK7-013 - 48.72
1992 Civic Si - 51220-S04-003 - 38.98
1996 Civic EX - 51220-S04-003 - 38.98

i know that 91 Hf and 90 Da use the same lower ball joint. im assuming either of those would work.

I'm trying to save money through the "same things, different part number", as in the case of the D16Z6 / D16Y8 Metal headgasket. Same thing, but look at the price difference -

D16Z6 - 12251-P08-004 - 48.51
D16Y8 - 12251-P2J-004 - 25.58.

I'd like to know too, since I need to replace the lower ball joint on my 91 EX knuckles.

I got old 88 DX, 88 STD, and 91 EX lower ball joints if someone wants to compare dimension(I don't have any calipers to measure them correctly).

well i used 91 civic hatchback ball joints on DA knuckles with no problem. So i dont see why you should have a problem with any others. When i bought them the guy that worked at the Dealer said SK7 is used with alot of hondas and acuras and usually means interchangeable between hondas

According to Napa, the DA and EF ones have the same P/N, and $47. The 92-00 and DC are also the same, but $22. I will buy the EG/EK/DC ones tomorrow(If I remember, I work right next to a Napa), and let you guys know if it fits.

Ok guys....all EF balljoints are the same.

EX - 51220-SK7-013
LX/DX - 51220-SK7-013
HF - 51220-SK7-013

Probably the same for the DA. All I want to know is the difference between the EF and EG balljoints.

I'll try to get pics later(don't have a camera on me), but I just picked it up from Napa. They were out of the $22 ones so I picked up the Napa-brand one for $32(NCP 260-1427 for 92 Civic). Looking at them, the EG ones look narrower and the groove where the snap ring goes is chamfered on the 91 EX one.

Final answer: They work!

I initially thought the EG ones were narrower, but I guess it was just the color that threw me off.

Here are quick cell phone pics:

BFH isnt very sucessful in pounding it back IN. its hard to get it setup STRAIGHT. best to use a press of some sort.

BFH is all you ened to remove it tho.

not really.

but i wasnt able to. i HAD to go get the balljoint press. once its in a good way, i finish it off with a BFH. actually you kind of have to finish it off that way, the ball joint press will bottom out the balljoint and ruin the balljoint. ask me how i know...

I just stuck a socket in between the adapter and the press. worked well.

I was able to swap the ball joint in about 30 minutes; this is my first time doing it. The press makes it very easy.
