calling all ac gurus
I just bought my wife a crx, 90 dx, and someone took the time to change over from r12 to r134a. The problem is it had no charge at all when i recieved it. So today i got the r134a and the gauge to check it out. it had lieki 12psi so brought it up to 45 psi and it stays fine but i cant considerably notice a change in the way it cools. the wife is getting on me about it so i need to figure it out. should these systems be brought higher than 45?? that is waht the guy at the local ac shop told me. anyway thanks
i have a complete a/c system from a crx and civic if you need any parts. i'd check with a honda dealer for the recomended psi for the system before you go any higher.
To answer everyones questions:
1. i did not vacuum out the system before refilling it because it is already r-134a and it already had a charge just a low one, i just recharged it.
2. the compressor is 'spooling' if that is waht you call it when the clutch kicks and it starts putting some drag on the motor. I do have air just not the coldest. I live in Hawaii so it is still semi warm outside and my a/c doesn't feel that great that is why i recharged it. oh and it is on max, but doest seem to want to pull anymore out of the can. it is still mostly full???
3. I did not replace the expansion valve because it was already converted before i got it, but where is the expansion valve? i am doing the conversion on my other rex right now and need to make sure i am doing it right, but i never heard about replacing the expansion valve.
Well thanks for all the quick responses guys. this is what i love about h-t

Just because the system was converted to R134a doesn't neccessarily mean the expansion valve was changed. The expansion valve is the same no matter which coolant you use, it's just specific to our vehicles. You can find it in the evaporator case under your dash. I'd try changing it out and vaccuuming out your system while you have it empty (just in case).
is the expansion valve the same as an orifice tube??? if so could that be culprit of a clogged system??? my other rex wont take a charge and an a/c guy said it could be the orifice tube but didnt tell me jack about it. i need to check it out.
