Default Electronic VSS issue

I was trying to put a electronic vss in my si today but it wouldn't go in, the gear seemed to be lower on the elect. than the cable. How the hell to you get the vss in? I'm trying to use a two piece metal vss of a 94 civic. Would a plastic one fit better? i tried searching but the topics that were relavant had no conclusion.
