could be your dizzy. if you have trouble starting sometimes, and your rpm gauge is working/not working in spurts. the Dizzy is the only thing tied to both starting and your rpm gauge.

i agree, probably something in your distributor.

can never tell if its the coil or the ignitor. i always forget which is which, and what does what anyway...

i had the same problem for a while and i just replaced my distributor with another one i got off ebay or something and it went away.

Had the same problem and thought it was the distributor. Turned out to be a loose ground on the thermostat housing. Prolly the dist.

Is your alternator ok and charging good? While mine was dying I had that problem and my distributor was good.

nah, i just bought a used one on ebay for less than a new ignitor alone from the dealer would cost.

although i do recommend distributor king if you want a new one. my friend is completely satisfied with ordering from him.

the same thing happend to me. but it happens only when i turn the turn signal on. when the turn signal isnt on, it works fine. but as soon as i turn on the turn signal it will bounce from 0 rpm's to whatever rpm im currently in.

It happend in my car too. Its most likely the speed sensor or something on the tranny...

could be that if your car is driving fine and nothings wrong but your rpm gauge

I was able to get it home fine for some reason. But now It wont even start. It's not showing signs of a bad battery or anything. It cranks but wont start. I don't think it's the main relay because I heard that that only happens durring hot weather and it's pretty cold over here. I had my mph sensor out of my tranny after i changed my clutch All that happend was the mph gauge didn't work. Nothing like what's happening now.

cranking and not tuning over is a sign on the timing skipping a tooth or two.

open up your distributor. check your rotor. it might have gone bad. if theres red dust, it means the distributor bearing is toast. which will overheat the distributor and melt the rotor.

if not that, then either your ignitor or ignition coil is bad. like i said, i always forget which is which.

test by sticking a screwdriver in one of the spark plug wires and put it near any body part (ground). if you see arcing, then you have ignition and time to look elsewhere.

you can always test your main relay if you can hear the fuel pump prime for 5 seconds when you turn the key to the ON position.

I tried putting the screw driver in the wire and the putting the the part above the handle near the ground bolt and nothing happend. So I would need to buy either a ignitor or a ignition coil. I also couldn't hear a fuel pump. But i'm not exactly sure what I'm trying to hear either.

well you just listen for the hum. but main relay has nothing to do with your ignition. so its your distributor. hopefully others can recommend what part to replace.

open it up and tell us what you see anyway.

just a tip, make sure you use a lot of force downward with a GOOD screwdriver when taking those screws out for the contacts. very easy to strip if youre careless.

wow, you really took it apart!

i was just saying if there was red dust i nthe cap, the bearing is bad. i dont see evidence of that. and the rotor looks fine, although i would judge directly by looking at the rotor screw if its shifted.

but it seems youre fine mechanically. just need to repalce one of the ignitor or ignition coil...
