Default Totalled Crx, Worth straightening for racecar, or parts car???????????

Here are some pics i took at a friends house, she was in the hospital for almost a week because the steering wheel was stronger than her chest. This damage was done at 45-50mph, and was mostly a head on glance.

The car has been totalled from the insurance company, but she still has it and want's me to figure out if it's worth straightening for race car. I think she will probably do it because it has a sentamental value to her.

Anyways let me know if she should straighten it or part it.........

And by the way, it looks like it only cracked at the main weld on the passenger side fender well. It will definitely need a new radiator core, front crossmember, etc... But really not that bad for 50mph.

ive seen crxs that look worse fixed, i think you would be able to, definatly would need a new bulkhead, and the rails might be bent, but they can be straightened, we just repaired one where the guy was involved in a head on with his hf, and the whole uni body was tweaked, we had to put in on a frame machine, i would get those fenders, bumper etc. off, so you can get a good look at it

its trashed.

you can put new parts on it for "sentimental value", and make it run fine again. but that front corner is tweaked beyond A LOT of work that just isnt worth it financially.

i wouldnt want to start a race car with that history. it would be different if the chassis already had a lot of parts and work like a cage already fixed to it, but its not worth anything to me to start with.

thats true, the one that we fixed, cost about 1800 to straighten it, but the guy wanted it done i guess it depends how much she would want to spend

Your gonna have to find another shell to use parts and possible the motor out of the one if that is your intentions, other then that it does look like it got hit in the face too hard.

Yeah she has'nt made up her mind, I told her that I'd pull the motor, fender, bumper, radiator core, front crossmember, if she wanted to fix it. That would save her a bunch of money on labor, and we can see what she is dealing with............But she is still undecided.

im not saying its impossible, just not practical.

its too bad tho. reminds me of my y-49 i bought from an old lady. doesnt even look like it was ever modified like mine. hope your friend is ok and recovers well.

my crx's previous owner had a small front fender bender, a lot less damage than yours and it got totalled and salvaged. she bought it back so it wouldnt get junked and she could control who would own it next. but for me, i only had to change the hood.

btw, i could use another y-49 sunroof panel

It could be fixxed. As long as the Strut mounting area is ok, and the door gaps all seem the same, it would be repairable. The only thing is it will always be cursed. You can't fix that.

I was thinking the same thing.......But the door seams are fine, and I'll let you guys know what she decides since the rest of the body is in perfect condition and unmodified. It is an 89 Si.

its the fracture next to the airbox that worries me. everytihng forward of that is bent. youd have to replace everthing in front of that, and still hope the suspension geometry, and subrframe isnt tweaked either, which is totally possible, ive seen it done. but a lot of work. is the chassis worth it? thats the question.

Tyson you bring up a lot of good points, and that's something she will have to think about. Plus bottom line is she will most likely be giving the car to me eventually. So when I start to take it apart for her I will have a better idea of what needs to be done, and weather the car is better off being a parts car. Either way the sunroof is going, so I'll let you have first dibbs and I'll take pics of the rest of the car when I go back over there..........

It won't ever go straight ever again. It's gone.
And tell her to wear her seatbelt next time. Blunt force trauma's a bitch.

poor , poor , Y-49.............
I too say pull the fenders , bumper , ect. as to get a better scope of the damage.
Only problem is once a salvage title , always a salvage tile...................
Damn I hate to see another rex parted out that could possible be saved though. espesially a y-49

Disclaimer: This is the only type of situation you will ever hear CRXBart say such a thing like he is about to say.

This car would be a great one to build a DRAG car with. Yeah for sure. Cut the front half off, and build a tube front like this, or mabey even more radical. I usually don't condone the building of drag cars from this chassis, for the reason on loosing their handling characteristics. In this case it's about the car's last chance of ever being anything. Besides it's yellow don't put it in the junkyard so unsuspecting people buy, and install cused parts, there for infecting more cars with the curse. Yellow cars should be driven until they are no longer usefull, or destroyed, so their parts never circulate and spread the disease that is the Y-Curse.

Just like above, I'd be pretty concerned about that crease next to the intake arm. I could also use a pair of y-49 doors...

i also think tube front is the way to go. could make a good track or drag car - you'll be replacing everything that isn't straight.

That sucks... Two CRX's down. My wife just destroyed mine last week. IDENTICAL damage to you. I've already started the strip down. Pulling the motor out Wednesday. Tonight it's supposed to rain so I'm working the interior parts loose. Think I may have a Red 90 Si Hatch I can get my hands on for my motor and tranny combo. Good luck to you.

Yah unfortunetly it is gonna have to go out for parts, either for you or other crx people. It seemed like a nice stock crx, and i would have loved to just drive it around the way it was, so i know how the emotional value of it can effect someone.

I use to have one long time ago that someone ran into the back of me and totalled, and it made me pretty sad, but the good thing is i now finally today have another just like it, just took a long time to find another one like it.

Btw, when my old one got totalled a few years back, i sold EVERYTHING off it, the glass, the interior, the doors, the suspension, the wheels, the motor and everything else in the engine bay except the rack and pinion, it was practically sitting on the ground naked.
