Tranny swap

I have a 91 teg with 231k on it. I bought it for $300 and want to build it but it has an auto trans. Should I even bother? Also could I go ls/vtec with the automatic?

I would ditch the tranny for atleast a manual one, possibly even an entire swap with lower mileage
