Default Inner Tie Rod ends

I need help removing my inner tierod ends, they are shoot and I have new ones just having a problem getting the old ones off, I got the outers off and I took the boots off, now I just need to know how to get the old ones off, what is the best way, also what size wrench or crowsfoot do I need? and Do I have to take the washer looking thing off or can I just wrench it off with the nut? I have a feeling I know how to get it off, just not to much room to work with and also not sure on the size of wrench I need to use or if there is a certian tool to use, if anyone can help the information would be greatful thanks, you can reply on here or email me at xx1loudmontexx@yahoo.com, or come over and help if you are around Grand Rapids, Mi area.

30mm seems alittle big, I had a 19mm almost on it, but it wouldn't fit I'm thinking maybe 21mm?

First you need to bend the lock washer up, then you can etheir put a wrench on the tie rod or they sell a special tool for removing inner tie rod ends. You can get them anywhere, Pepboys, nappa, advanced auto, etc. Matco sells a nice one as well. I cant remember what size wrench fits on the tie rod but I know you can use one.

i think it's easiest in a vice

unbend the lock washer.

hold the rack with 22mm, undo tie rod with 17mm

i just use a screwdriver to first move the washer, then follow up with a chisel to move it out of the way. i used a 17 or 19 mm wrench and a large adjustable crescent wrench on on tie rod part (there is a part that flatens out so you can hold onto it with a wrench. then i step on the crescent wrench to keep things from moving and move the 17 or 19 mm wrench and it works really well. no need for special tools.

I guess my problem is getting the washer out of the way, it is bent over the inner tie rod nut, which is probably normal, but how do I move it. Just take a screwdriver and Big Fkin Hammer to it? and then the 17mm will fit over it? and just hold the steering arm or whatever, it is and bust it loose kinda like the outter tie rod? I just need ideas of how I can move the washer to get the wrench over it. I was just told you can wrench the washer off with the nut, but I couldn't get a wrench over it, if anyone has any ideas or can help let me know. I probably won't be back working on it till next weekend.

Yes, you should first buy some new ones from the dealership (unless the new tie rods came with them, as sometimes they do), then you should simply destroy the ones on there with careless abandon. There is no easy way... just pound them mercilessly with a sldge and punch, and/or wrench at them with some big ol dykes.

first of all, i HIGHLY recommend you just take the whole steering rack out of the car in order to deal with inner tie rods. you can do it without removing it, and just removing the bolts so you can dorp it down an inch or so for more room, but its just not worth the effort given the limited space and angles to work.

i used a combination of chisels, pry bars and vise grip to unbend the tab. like i said, a lot easier off the car.

when i try it while mounted on the car, i just get an adjustable wrench which is kinda thin, and just pry the damn lock washer off. i dont unbend it, just grip around it and pry it off. it pretty much destroys the lock washer, but theyre cheap, so have a replacement ready. the only problem is that you gotta be lucky to have the right angle to get the wrench in there.

slow91crxdx (12:56 PM 11/6/2006): Hey, about that inner tierod deal, I don't want to take the whole rack off, so basically I just get a cresent wrench in there and just take the washer and nut off at the same time? It is a pain in the *** to try to get in there, but they both have to be done, I was trying to just get a wrench around both but that wasn't working, I can just get a cresent wrench on the lock washer and nut and bust it loose?
slow91crxdx (1:54 PM 11/6/2006): Hey what up did you answer back sorry I don't go on honda-tech to often

yes. IF, big IF, you can get the wrench securely around the tabs AND enough room to twist, you can just break it off.

i cant urge you any more to take the whole rack off. it will save you time.

I'll have to look into taking the whole thing off, how does it make it that much easier? Either that or have my buddy come over and help because he's done inner tierods before.

it makes it completely accessible!

with it bolted on the car, its NOT accessible!

ive done it both ways several times. im telling i prefer to take the rack off first.

btw, if youre taking the passenger inner tie rod off, i also highly recommend replacing that rack end bushing! its probably the source of any play on that side than a worn balljoint. because if that balljoint is bad, due to a torn boot, that bushing is gonna be bad as well. and probably already is bad after almost 2 decades of use.

it's no hard to take out of the car. jsut mark the steering colum and rack. and then unbolt the bottom bolt of the steering colum in the car. then there's 4 bolts under the car then you just slide it sideways let it fall then pull it out the other.

i installed the inner tie rod ends on then put it back in then installed the outers. ps get a aligment asap or you will lose your tires within 400 miles lol i went for having barely legal thread to haveing metal showing within like 3 days lol. gl

Do I have to undo the shift linkage and the exhaust, thats kinda what I was dreading, also what do you mean mark the steering column? If I don't have to remove the shift linkage and exhaust I might just pull the whole thing out, also how hard is it to replace the tierod end bushing? That will probably have to be done also.

yes. just unbolt the cat at the header, and the shift linkage at the lever. dont deal with the bitch pin unless you already know how to deal with it. personally, i never take it off under the car.

really, youre looking at a world of pain tryign to do what youre trying to do with it mounted...

im not going to try to convince you anymore. just go and do it.

I appricate your comments and help, If I don't have a to remove the bitch pin I will consider doing it that way, it took my almost an hour banging on that thing when I swapped motors, which I would have done all this then, but oh well you live and you learn, I will let you guys know how my progress comes along.
