Default 91 crx dx. eacv problem?

i have a 91 crx dx and it suddenly has taken to cutting out about 10 seconds after i start it up. it will go up to 1500 - 2000 rpms and then just drop right into the toilet and stall. goosing the gas does nothing. it was doing a little surging back and forth while cold for a few days before it finally just refused to keep running. i am getting spark and fuel. i am thinking it is the eacv but they are a little pricey to just buy one to test out. does anyone have experience with this scenario?

It sounds like a problem with the main relay. Before you try to crank the engine, turn your key into the "II" position and see if you can hear the relay click off after about two seconds. If not, it's your main relay.

Yeah, the problem with the main relays is that a solder point gets worn out over time, not allowing your fuel pump to prime. No fuel -> no start or your engine shortly cuts out. I know I have this same problem but it comes and goes, I can still start and drive my car 99% of the time with no problems. Sometimes it acts up, especially when I make a lot of short trips. Whereas my problem may be slight, you may actually need a whole new relay. Try the trick I talked about earlier a few times, if you still can't hear the relay click off, it probably needs to be replaced.

And concerning the EACV, if it was bad, you'd be getting a CEL and your idle would fluctuate when the car is running. If you know where it is already, you may just want to clean it out w/ carb or MAF cleaner anyways, it's most likely dirty.

Hope that helps, good luck .

the relay clicks off after a few seconds but i pulled it anyway just to inspect the solder joints. my idle was fluctuating some before this happened, especially when cold. i am going to try to clean the eacv out or find one in a junkyard. the problem with new york is that you have to move your car so often, there is so little time to fix problems.
thanks for the info.
