Default Cold air intake value?

Everything I read says buy the Aem intake b/c it's the best? then it wins best add-on car part to for the money in some mag. Then you got people
saying an intake is barely worth it at all---I already have a k and n filter.....My question is a cold air intake worth $200 bucks for the horsepower gain----Or will
pretty much any CAI with similar materials and design work and be worth it?
Or are some really that good and just say screw it throw down the $$$?

If I were to do it again, I would do comptech. I hate constantly cleaning that filter. But nice mod. I think I drive more than 95% of the population though. Right now I am running half of my CAI until I get boost.

Both the AEM CAI and the Comptech Icebox are very good CAIs. Both there are some differences. Here's a breakdown of each.

AEM CAI:
- has nice HP "hump" around 4000-4500 RPM (when compared to the Icebox)
- has an "aggressive" or "throaty" intake noise when the secondary intake runners open up. Some people like this others do not. The noise can attract unwanted attention (ie. police). It also makes a whistling noise which can be somewhat irritating.
- you have to be careful about driving through standing water, since the filter sits low in the fender area.
- air filter is harder to clean when compared to the Icebox, because the fender liner has to be disconnected

Comptech Icebox:
- increase HP in the low to mid RPM range when compared to the AEM
- intake noise is close to the stock intake
- intake inlet is positioned directly behind the turn signal lense, which is higher than the AEM
- "looks" similiar to the stock intake (ie. airbox)
- has a better throttle response when compared to the AEM

Both intakes perform within approx. 1-2 hp of each other in the upper RPM range.

I prefered the Icebox, but wasn't willing the ante up the $$$ to buy it, so I made my own "Icebox". It has all the same charateristics as the Comptech Icebox, but at a much lower cost. You can go to my webpage at http://www.geocities.com/bretq/DIY_Icebox_CAI.html for information on make your own "Icebox".

I got my Icebox and filter for $225. For the hp gain, it is worth every cent.
I mean, we spent $300-$400 on an exhaust that gives use 1-3 hp.

There are some things I would cheap out on, but I am not sure of hacking your stock air box.
Also, I am sure the Icebox design is for optimum flow, with ideal flow pattern desired. I am not sure that can be easily duplicated.
I am a ChE and I work on piping and instrumentation design once in a while, and to make sure a flow stays laminar (instead of turbulent, vice versa) takes a lot of effort and money.

AEM CAI = best bang for the buck. And you get a cool whistle noise as you speed up.

I realize that there was a lot of thought and testing that went into the design of the Comptech Icebox. I am not a ME, but when I fabricated my own DIY "Icebox" is used the same diameter tubing (3.0"), the same length tubing, same bends, similiar air horn as the Comptech Icebox. There are only a couple slight differences between Comptech Icebox and my "Icebox". The first difference is that Comptech's air horn is located behind the side turn signal and my "Icebox" air horn is located behind the front turn signal. The second difference is down pipe connected to the airbox, the Icebox has it's down pipe molded into the airbox, the "Icebox's" down pipe fits into the bottom of the airbox just like the stock resonator. Also both intakes have the same size airbox. So you can see that there should be no reason why the DIY "Icebox" shouldn't be comparable to the Comptech Icebox.

One last thing, the "Icebox" only requires the removal of the stock resonator and insertion of the intake tube. No "hacking" is required to the stock airbox or resonator.

IC for a moment, I thought it required using the OEM piping under the resonator.

puddle, what puddle....

I have the bypass valve.

the AEM CAI is a great mod. Matched with a good header and exhaust, lets the engine breathe the way it was supposed to.

This was headers and exhaust (the test with the stock airbox however, was done with also h/e) but I am sure the results are highly controlled.

I am a skeptic either but I can't really dispute it unless I duplicate their test.

DAILY DRIVING=ICE BOX
RACE TRACK=
I've had both and here is my take.
Ice box=
1.better throttle response
2.better low and mid range
3.no chance of hydrolocking
4.almost the same hp at high rpm.
5.almost silent

AEM=
1.less low and mid range power.
2.less throttle response
3.chance of hydrolocking
4.alot of noise
But AEM=best intake there is for high rpm power
