Y1 and YS1 differences
Lots of differences!!
Y1 is 90-91 origin with a small spline mainshaft like the 90-91 cable tranny Integra's, so they use a different clutch disk. The Y1 is a good tranny, but now they are older a number of them are know for a 2nd gear grind. Replacement parts are not available from the dealer, but "gearspeed" does have an upgrade for thier syncro sets. The gear ratios are decent and they came from 89-91 crx and civic SIR's from Japan.
The YS1 is the one everybody wants. It is the newer larger spline style like that found in the newer hydro tranny's and uses similar internals which can be purchased at any acura dealer if needed, but they were the least know of all vtec cable gearbox's with grinding issues. The gearing itself was awesome, alomost identical to that of the Integra type R with the exception of 1st gear.
Both of these tranny's can be found with the rare option of LSD, but it was rare with a ratio of maybe 1 out of 15. The LSD was dofferent between the two tranny's as well. I can't confirm this, as i have never taken my YS1 apart, but it was rummored that Quaiffe was contracted for the lsd option in the jdm spec YS1. I called the company and was told that they did have some relations with Honda back in the day, but the only way to confirm this was that the diff itself was a billet unit.
I hope this helps
