civic 01 LX swap to EX
HI.. i have a question.. i have a civic 4dr LX and i saw a EX engine with transmission for $500 with 40k miles what else do i need to swap the engine .. what it the different ? is it the same engine with different heads. and ECU?.. sorry if someone posted it already.. im new in here..
The only thing you will need is a complete head, and something to control the VTEC engagement and pulloff. The D17A1 and A2 motors are identical, except for the heads.
Just make sure the cylinder head has everything you need in way of a full valvetrain and VTEC system. And you will also need either a APEXi VAFC, or the ECU from an EX. The VAFC is plug and play, but the VAFC will need to be street/dyno tuned.

exactly what red em2 said.
But u will need a VAFC 2, not just a VAFC 1.
Also, its probably gunna be cheaper / better to do a vtec head swap, then all u need to do is buy the head+ vafc2.
THis is sorta the same principle as a mini-me on a d16, I suspect just as with a d16 mini-me, u will get more power with a headswap ( raised compression) than a full d17a2 swap.
