obd2 to obd1 conversion - emissions and inspection
I might be buying an 01 itr here soon, and i want to hondata it, but i have a few questions about the obd conversion. Mostly I was just wonder, will and obd2 car with an obd1 ecu pass state and county inspections? here in pa, the state inspection is visual, im not worried bout that, but for obd2 cars they plug it in (as u kno). Basically if i do the conversion, will i be abvel to get it inspected anywhere. I kno someone who will inspect it either way, but i was just wondering if its possible to stay legit. also what would be the best obd1 ecu? or doesnt it matter. lastly, i really like hondata, but what is crome and neptune, and how do they compare. thanks

the data port doesnt work on obd2 to obd1 swaped cars... the obd1 ecu doesnt have the nessary hardware i belive, so if they plug into the port it wont connect ;x

you will pass visual with the OBD1 ECU, but not the OBD2 scan tool.
To pass emissions simply drop in the stock ECU for the test, and drop back in the OBD1 ECU when you're done.
Best ECU is dependant on your price range. The general ECU that everyone loves is the P28. I'm not 100% sure why but it seems to be the most widely used.
IMO the P72 and P30 are better. Exact same functionality as the P28 with additional functions (knock in the P30, RPM activated output and Knock on the P72) Knock sensor can be disabled with a simple check box and the RPM output does not have to be used.
You can also buy a P06 or a P05 and add the functionality of O2 heater and VTEC control to them if you can solder well.
(Once chipped, they all perform the same basic functions)
Generally speaking Crome and neptune are a DIY version of Hondata.
While Hondata is a more refined system, you have to go to specific places to have it tuned or any of the options changed. (without purchasing a full setup that costs a lot more than it should)
Crome/Neptune you can tune it yourself or have anyone with a wideband tune the car. Plus you can make changes at will if you have a chip burner (~$50-100)

I'm in PA and just got my car inspected!! I have a jdm itr swap and running a chip obd1 p28 with obd1 to obd2b jumper harness and the machine couldnt read it! however they did a gas cap test and pased but I have to correct the ecu issue next year in order to get my inspection.. Some advice keep a spare obd2 a or b ecu around come next year!!! Also remember u have to drive 40-50 miles to reset it before getting inspection..
