Default ABS sensors and tire diameter.

i REALLY want to take advantage of the closeout price for RE050A's. but the diameters are mismatched on the only 17" tires available at the low price. and ive heard it can mess up the ABS sensor, causing it to engage prematurely and erratically sometimes.

is 205/50/17 front (25.07 dia), 245/45/17 rear (25.68) simply NOT going to work?

I really wouldn't reccomend it. Any size difference at all is going to adversely affect the ABS system.

I wouldn't get the wrong size tires, even on a closeout. Besides, with closeout tires, if you damage one, you won't be able to get a replacement, so you'll be stuck buying more than one tire.

I would stick to the proper size tires for your car. With 17" wheels, that's 205/50-17 and 225/45-17. Plenty of good tires are available in those sizes, including the excellent Goodyear F1 GS-D3 ($153F/$169R). If you don't want to spend that much money, and you don't mind having slightly lower performance, you can get great "bang for the buck" with the Kumho Ecsta SPT ($79F/$66R in those sizes after rebate).

well, if im gonna do it right, i want 245/40/17 in the rear.

225 wouldnt be enough tire in the rear.

if i remember correctly, SPT's dont come in that either.

if i got some combination of 215 and 245, itll be perfect too.

$95/tire at the Tire Rack, less $40 rebate on a set of four.

rebates been over.

but i might be stuck getting SPT's. oh well. couldnt be a bad thing really.

was really hoping for more response tho....

oh well, ordered the tires locally from a place literally down the street. would have been nice to take advantage of the rebate too, ive been waffling over tires and wheels for so long...

You can still get the rebate. It's good through December 31 at all Kumho dealers. It just isn't being publicized on some sites (e.g. Tire Rack). So you should be able to get it, even from your purchase from a local dealer. The rebate form is on Kumho's website here. Just make sure you send in your receipt within 30 days.

If you're looking for a tire similar to the SPT - i.e. decent dry performance, wet performance, treadlife, and price - you don't have a lot of choices in 14" sizes. The Yokohama ES100 is available in some 14" sizes. There's no rebate, though, so you may as well wait until you actually need them...

i knew youd say ES100!

and you know i hate them.

shrug, i think id replace the crappy all seasons on my crx with just dunlop A2.

i plan on using the crx to drive up the mountain to snowboard. was stuck in a snowstorm last year.

its weird, living 22 years on the east coast, NEVER needed to use snowchains. once snow hits here, west coast ppl go crazy and all hell breaks loose... chp wont even let you drive without snow chains if theres any CHANCE of snow!

i still have 13" yokohama h4's i need to use up too. those should be decent in snow/cold too.

Oh, come on! It's a decent tire - okay on dry pavement, excellent in the rain, and lasts a long time. It's fairly inexpensive, too. The one downside is that some other tires - notably the Kumho SPT - have come on the market recently that offer the same or better performance at a lower price. But the ES100 is still a good summer tire, and will out-perform any all-season tire in moderate to warm temperatures.

However, since you need to use the same tires on snow as the rest of the year, you're better off with an all-season tire. Unfortunately, the same thing is true of all-season tires as summer tires: the best tires just aren't available in sizes smaller than 15". You can only get tires the same size as your wheels (unless you want to get different wheels), and if they don't make 'em, you're stuck.

actually, i have 2 sets of 14x6 wheels and 1 set of 13x5 wheels at my disposal. not including the several sets of wheels for my s2000 ive accumulated already...

(yet i dont think ive bought a new set of tires in the last 4 years until today.... odd.)

which is why i ask about different tires for different purposes.

Since you have extra wheels, you could consider getting winter tires for winter conditions, and summer tires for the rest of the year.

Then get the Azenis, and you can replace your tires three times as often.

Or, get bigger wheels, and some other tire.

In any case, stop complaining because YOU don't like such-and-such tire (even though a lot of people do) and YOU don't have bigger wheels (even though a lot of people do). The world is not customized to your demands. You can only get what's available. That's life. Deal with it.

(I can't believe that you saved $40 on this board today and you're still complaining and complaining and complaining... are you sure you're not my wife? )
