Stripped oil pan bolt, new oil pan?? what are my options
changed my oil today and the oil pan bolt stripped. last time i had issues as there is a tiny dent right by the drain plug area. went in last time, but this time it stripped.
got a few questions.
1) is there a way i can fix this without getting a whole new oil pan? the dent isnt bad at ALL, just like 1 cm across and a few mm deep. but can i re-thread the pan or maybe use teflon tape on the bolt to make it not leak??
2) i can get my hands on a b18a/b oil pan, will that fit?
oh ya this is a 2nd gen JDM B16

Go to your local parts store and you can get a replacement rubber gasket. Theyre going to need your old plug to know what size to give you. Check the thread on the oil pan and make sure that it isnt bad. If it is then get that rubber plug, if not get a new drain plug...
get an oversized self-tapping drain plug. Or get a tap the size of the drain hole and re-chase it. Personally I would remove the oil pan to do this because of the metal shavings, but ive done it in the car and i just put my finger inside clean the shavings best i could.. then put a thing magnet inside to gather the rest (best I could). I also let it run for 10 minutes.. and did another oil change to make sure i got most of the shavings i could.
what ek_chris said works very well, but not everyone can or has access to a tap.
they sell oil drain plugs that is easily switched open / closed when u want it to be. you could red loctite it into the oil pan and just use that.

ya i will not be able to take it off at the moment as my winter car isnt geared up quite yet.

once i was in a hurry so i bought one of theses when the thread was messed up

got it at autozone its piggy backso far so good i guess.. better then when the car got a oil change at a shop. they just siliconed it and said fix it later

Also---I'm am not positive but I believe all B series oil pans are the same.
If you use teflon tape, make sure you get the kind that wont degrade in oil.

haha found this out today, it discentigrated on contact with oil lol. but the good news is that it isnt the pan after all thats stripped, its the bolt. im getting a new 1 tomorrow

get 2 vise grips close one of them hard on the bolt and use the other one to tight the first vicegrip bolt. then give it a good wack anticlockwise and call it a day

it just screws in.. its basicly a screw with a small hole in it.. and you put another screw in the hole to keep the oil from coming out..
its worth a try since its bout 2 bucks at autozone.

oh i see now, its like a self tapping bolt and then u screw a smaller bolt into it. ill see if they got those locally around here, thanks!

that way i dont really understand what u mean... but i took the bolt out the other day, re-drained the oil i just changed. checked out the drain plug and seen that it was actually the plug that was stripped to expletive and the threads in the oil pan were still ok.
i took the cruse washer off and the bottom 2 threads on the bolt were still good, i put in back in and put a little high temp silicone on it and tightened it up and it didnt leak. this will be good enough until i get a new drain plug or next spring, whatever comes 1st
