I would not recommend these to anyone in Florida (or the SF Bay area or any area that doesn't get snow).

The AST is an all-season tire (and not a particularly good one). All-seasons are designed for people who use the same tire in snow and frigid cold as they do in moderate to warm temperatures. They're a compromise in order to provide that flexibility; they don't perform as well in the winter as true winter tires, and they don't perform as well the rest of the year as summer tires.

Since you're in Florida, you don't need to worry about snow or cold-weather performance. Get a good set of summer tires.

Right now you can get a set of the Kumho Ecsta SPT summer tires in 205/50-15 for $44 each after rebate (from the Tire Rack). That's an awesome price, only $7/tire more than the AST for a tire that is MUCH better in every way (except in snow). The SPT is very good for dry traction and handling, outstanding in the rain (important in Florida), and lasts a long time for a performance tire (30-45K miles). Highly recommended.

There is no point in getting an all season tire in Florida. All season tires will never be as good as summer tires in warm weather. All season tires are meant to be used in places that get snow. How often does it snow in Florida?

Cheers.

summer tires are perfectly fine in rain (with some exceptions, most notably Falken Azenis)
they just dont perform well in snow or freezing temperatures

Yes but no snow. A proper summer tire will perform better in the rain than an all-season tire.

A lot of people (apparently including you?) have the wrong idea about all-season tires, and they think you need all-seasons for rain. YOU DON'T NEED ALL-SEASON TIRES FOR RAIN. Summer tires are designed to handle rain as well as dry roads, and they do it better than all-seasons. All-seasons are designed to handle a wider range of cold temperatures and snow, in addition to warmer temperatures. You don't need all-seasons in Florida.

The Kumho Ecsta SPT summer tire is AWESOME in rain, way better than any all-season tire.
