I have a 1992 Civic Hatchback it is a cx with a d16z6 swap.

It died on Monday, and i am still trying to find out what went wrong.
It had a really slow start for the longest, which made me think it was the battery
I replaced the battery and the car ran fine.
The next day or so it was back to starting slow and then finally turning over.
So i assumed i had a bad alternator, that was draing the battery.
I get another new battery and change out the alternator, the car ran fine for about 2 days, until it started dieing agian slowley, just a real slow start.
well on monday i started it up to go to school, and it was just a very slow slow turn over until it fired, when my class was over for that day i go outside and nothing will turn over on the car.
Everything else works on the car.. radio, accesories and all.
so i assumed , oh maybe the starter is bad, so i changed the starter.
and still nothing.
so far i have replaced the starter, main relay, alternator and the battery..
everything on the car still works, its just when i try and start it after like the 2nd click with the key just nothing..
what it is doing is the same is if you tried to start it without the clutch in....

any advice or something else to check...

Also the car wouldent take a jump?
we did try to roll start it, but we dident have a big enough hill or people to keep pushing it back to do it agian.
but it did sound like maybe it would have roll started

 

well my friend I got the solution to that problem SALE THE CAR TO ME LOL

 

im baffled i have no clue cause i would have said to replace all that stuff you already replaced

 

did it misfire before it died?

 

had that problem before change your coil in the distributor should do the trick.

 

Are all of your fuses good?

there is a button on the pedal for when you push the clutch pedal in it lets you turn on your car.. maybe it broke or the little thing that pushes into broke off.reach under the dash and look for it you'll see it!

also you can put the key on the ON position and then use a small wire to spin the starter and see if the car starts. just run a wire from the pos. post in the battery to the starter actuater(little wire that goes on starter). the starter should spin when you jump it like that

 

well, we put a voltmeter on the starter and it was getting power.
the way the car died was a slow turn over
almost as if it was a slowley dieing battery, until it just wouldent crank anymore...
which is why i dont think it wa sa fuse.. if a fuse were to pop, that would stop the power dead instant..

 

check your distrubutor buddy, mine did the same thing it would start really slow sometimes just turn over and over an over then start until it just died and i took a coil from my other civic distributor and changed them, boom back in action.

 

ok, damn, i know hot to change a distib i think, lol
i am not all to motor savy, but i like to do what i can.
i am afriad i will mess up the timing... is there a way i can check to see if the dizzy is getting power...
or should i just mark the place where its at like witha sharpie, and change it...

 

also a new symptom, is when i try and start it.
the oil light,battery light and check engine light fade slowley in to be very very dim..
while the srs loght and the e-brake light stay on very very bright..
also the e-brake light wont go off, even when it is put down...

 

Have you checked all the grounds to the motor and trans. You said the starter will not turn over? will the engine turn over I have seen the bearing in the distributor seize and keep the motor from cranking over. You cant mess anything up as far as timing goes if you take the distributor out the It is keyed so it will only line up with the cam on way you can't put it in 180 out. the only thing you want to do is make a mark across the top mounting point of the dist onto the head to let you line the timing back if you reuse the old one.

 

it really sounds like your battery is ****...double check the ground....maybe go in and get it tested(it's free)

Make sure the alternator is grounded properly also

 

if the battery were **** i would be able to jump it.
the part that baffles me is the way it slowley died until nothing at all

 

just mark it at the spot it is at and opne her up and change the coil, they're pretty much the same in any honda distributor i used my civic coil for my 93 integra, or just borrow a distributor from a buddy that would fit. I'm sure that's the problem, i mean it's the only reasonable explanation.

i also changed out the ecu to see if that was it.. and same prob
i will have to change the dizzy, i think i have a spare one ...

anyone think it could be the ignition?

 

something similar happened to me, i had power for all accesories but it wouldn't turn over. It ended up being the coil inside the distrubter so maybe thats it

like when your dizzy died, was it just nothing..
or was it still trying to turn over and stuff.. it seems if ur dizzy was dead the car would still want to start itself. or something
im just asking cause a dizy is a expensive item to buy to not have been the problem.

well i had my coil die out on me and it just kept cranking, but a guy that responded to you in this thread that mentioned that the bearing seize in your distributor (i don't know if thats true). here's a way to check your coil and so on...

i had the same problem after i carelessly used engine cleaner once.
took me a long time to fingure out it was the coil. ($80 at advanced)
