Default Tranny question??

How could I tell if I need a new tranny or not? What are some signs to look for? My motor isn't reving past 3,000 rpms and was wondering if that is cause of my tranny or possibly my clutch/flywheel....

check your clutch, are you able to shift into different gears easily? if not could be the clutch. when did this start ? are you letting your car warm up? do you hear any knocking sounds from the engine? if you do possibly the vaLVES OR ROCKER ARM. please give us more insight .

yeah, I'm able to shift into each gear easily with my car off and on. It started doing this last weekend, and ever since then, I haven't driven it anywhere. Its just been sitting in my back yard with a car cover ...I let my car warm up before I do anything, but it still does the same. Theres no knocking at all whenever my car is running...Right before it happened, there was a little bit of knocking that would come and go, but now, theres nothing. I took my valve cover off, and everything look to be in place. Didn't see anything bent at all. My car starts up just fine, but it seems to idle pretty low. It idles around 750 rpms and whenever I give it gas, it will almost wanna die. It actually has happened before while I was driving.

hmmmm, if your idling around 750 and you give it gas and it starts to die that might be an alternater issue. as for why if wont rev past 3000 rpms, hmm, nothings bent and gears go in fine so you know thats not the syncro, have you checked the timing or even changed the distributor, something might be misfiring or even the spark plugs. one of my spark plugs was burnt out last week and it was sorta doing the same thing where it wont let me past a certain rpm. have you checked the oil and all the fluids ?

I have a new battery and new alternator all ready put on to my car. My cam gears are set on by 1, but it didn't seem to affect my car at all. I changed out my spark plugs and check my plug wires, so they should also be fine. I'll check them again whenever I get back home. My oil level is good, and so is my clutch fluid. My friend and I bleed my clutch the other day, so there isn't any air in the lines. I may need to check my tranny fluid. Do you know which both it is that I take out in order for me to do this? I noticed some oil or something that seems to be on my tranny.

"Ok if you look at your tranny the drain plug is just a square that fits into a 3/8 ratchet w/ no socket attached. The filler is right above it to the left you need a long funnel or a rubber hose fill it up and replace the washers."

thank preludevtec23 for that info

you know this happened to my friends girlfriends eclipse. it wouldnt go past 2500rpm or like 3000rpm. they checked the tranny fluid, and found nothing but some nice air! after filling it up it ran great. good luck.

So all they did was just pour some more tranny fluid in and it was just fine?
