Tires, Tires, Tires... Choices, Comparison, and Why you choose....
I have for two years raced 1/2 mile asphalt oval track 30* banking exclusively on Falken Azenis 215's in 195 60r 14's. This past year, this tire is no longer available. Falken has a replacement that is similiar, but not in every aspect. They replaced that tire with the RT615, and I am not so sure I want to run those.
So I am looking towards the 2007 season and my tire options.
Tires for my class must be no larger than 195 60R 14
Here are the spec's of the Falken's Rt615
load rating 86
traction A
Temperature A
Performance MAX
Tread depth 8 as in 8/32
Rim width min/max 5.5 - 7
Section Width 7.9
Tread width 6.6
Overall Diameter 23.2
Rim protector Yes
Max PSI 51
RPM 900
Measuring rim width 6
Now the difference : single(615's) vs double(215's) sidewall ply
traction A, width 6.6 etc.
Looking for an alternative tire and others input on the analysis they used to determine what tire they choose to run.
Now I have looked at this tire, no experience with it but just looked at the numbers exclusively and made a comparison.
Hankook Ventus Rs Z212
Load rating 86
Traction AA **
Temperature A
Performance MAX
Tread depth 9 (as in 9/32) **
Rim Width min/max 5.5 - 7
Section width 7.8
Tread width 6.9 **
Overall diameter 23.2
Rim Protector YES
Max PSI 51
RPM 894
Measuring rim Width 6
Static Load Radius 10 **
Sidwall type DSB **
Now those catagories which Hankook appears better have asteriks. Yet can be had for $5-$7 per tire less.
What do YOU look for in a tire which you could/would run aggressively?
Any and all suggestions are welcomed so long as you explain your position and choice. Sorry, I want to know and why you came to your conclusion!!! Yeah, I know, I'm kinda **** about it, but it is my *** in the seat, and a 18" thick wall (Brothers, Mr. Inside Wall and big brother Outside, can be very nasty people to deal with)
NO slicks unfortunately.
Much appreciated,
Donnie

I still recommend the Falken Azenis RT-615.
For a side-by-side autocross comparison test of the RT-615 with the RT-215, the Hankook, and a few other tires*, read this. Then we can talk more if you like.
*Note - The three other street tires they tested are not available in 14" sizes...

nsxtasy, I would if my Adobe wasn't messed up. Can you possibly summarize, and we can go from there?

Donnie

They did an autocross test of six street tires (and also six R compound track tires). Based on average lap times, here is how the street tires ranked:
1. Falken Azenis RT-615
2. Falken Azenis RT-215
3. Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD07
4. Hankook Ventus R-S2 Z212
5. Kumho Ecsta MX
6. BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KD
They had a number of subjective comments, but suffice it to say that those correlated with the lap times.
You also said that the Hankook was $5-7 cheaper. The RT-615 in 195/60-14 is $61 at Vulcan. Where are you finding the Z212 at $54-56, if I may ask?

I agreed with nsxtasy on this one. I would go with the rt615. I have seen the difference between both the rt215 and the rt615 and the rt615 is much better.
