Default Strup header for 02 EX...anybody have it? ...good brand?

Hi all,
First time poster. I searched but found nothing on 'Strup' headers. I'm looking at a header for my 02 EX (actually it's a Canadian Si) and I came across this header:

http://www.optionsauto.com/pro...21102

I've never seen the name before so I'm wondering if anyone has heard of it and/or bought it. I realize that 'you get what you pay for', but the DC Sports header is the only other header I've seen for this car and it seems to be overpriced.

Also, is it possible to buy just a downpipe from the header to the cat?

Any help would be appreciated.

Chris

What about a Megan header? I see quite a few people have other parts from Megan Racing (rear strut bars, etc.) but what about their header? It seems to be much cheaper than even the Strup header. See here:

I really havent heard anything about Strup header's, but I agree DC are VERY overpriced for what they deliver.

People have become blinded by the name, and are now unaware that a LOT of DC header's cause a loss in power somewhere in the RPM band ( with very small gains where it does gain) on certain applications.

I agree, because a header is SUCH a waste for a d17 ( as you will unlikely see much of a gain) go for the cheap megan header, at least u wont be breaking the bank for gains/losses similar to the DC.

Expect MAYBE 5-7 WHP from i/h/e

I wouldn't spend money on something that wouldn't produce decent power numbers for the dollar.

Agreed. That's why I won't spend anything on the drivetrain, until I work through the warranty a little more.

Thanks for the info guys. I don't expect much out of the header (ie. I realize my D17 is weeny), but that stock header rusting away and the heat shield in there is just damn ugly. It looks like I'll be trying the Megan header.

As for the downpipe, I see that right next to the header in the online store is a Megan "test pipe" I'm trying to determine if I want to eliminate my cat (not the furry gray one that is). I'll have to bolt the cat/stock downpipe back on when I go through AirCare (Canada only...US has something similar I think). Would I get any problems from the cops you guys think? Is there a pipe I could get that "looks" like it's got a cat on there.

Here's the test pipe:

Strup header is a good header. I think that one of the people involved with DC broke away and begain making Strup headers. So it is about the same design as the DC. I have a Strup racing header on my swap and it works really nice. If your header is rusting, I doubt that it is anything beyond surface rust. If I were you I would get some heat wrap, take the header off, wrap the entire header, and paint it with a black silicone spray. This will make it look nice, you will be able to take away your heat sheild and it WILL make a big difference in performace as it will reduce the under hood temps by alot.

That's a good idea. Would this heat wrap be from an auto parts store or can I get it at any hardware store?

Can anyone comment on the downpipe or "test pipe" ?

The "rust" on your OEM manifold is fine, just ugly.

Im not to sure what you want us to comment about on the downpipe/testpipe issue.

IMO if ur gunna get a header, get a downpipe, cause they go hand in hand.

Regarding the testpipe, They will be more of a hassle than its worth. You might even see a LOSS in torque.

I to live in BC ( Abbotsford) and on my old CRX i ran 2.25" piping with a 2.25" Cat, and the car ran well, i eventually switched it out to a 2.25" testpipe, i lost a TON of low end, but i did get a few more ponies up top.
But for me, since it was mostly a daily driver, o ended up going back to the cat.

Plus, it gets annoying+ expensive if u have to pay to get the testpipe/cat changed, unless u have them bolted in, so u can just unbolt and change it in ur driveway.

The entire OE exhaust is low grade stainless (409), so all it ever is is just surface rust. Anyways, don't wrap a header, wrapping headers and moisture often make them crack. If you have concerns about it rusting either, leave the heat shield on and polish that, or send the header to Jet Hot, for about 100 bucks they'll coat it and it'll be shiny from now until the end of time.

correct. Charlie Westrup was the GM of DC Sports for 25 years before moving on after AEM purchased DC. I sell lots or Strup headers for various makes for Charlie for a couple years now. Its a great bang for the buck without question. I sell more g35/350z header sets then you can imagine for Charlie. Those guys spend money and wouldn't think twice about paying top dollar for quality...and they are purchasing the strup pieces for its fit, finish, performance and ease of install in their cases. The strup stuff is very good. anyone interested can simply contact me at jeff@partshippers.com hope that helps. sorry...never saw this post til now
