Need HELP!
Ok so here is what happened. I was driving down the interstate doing about 80mph. My car started to back fire alot. When I gave it gas it just kept back firing. I pulled over and the car died. When I tryed to start it again it just kept back firing and would not run. What is wrong?? Could the timing of jumped? Any help would be good because my car is sitting on the side of the road...
LOL !!!!! Its the screw in the rotor under the distributor cap. Get a new rotor from autozone (it comes with the screw) put blue thread lock on it and tighten in down and this will kix it for good.
Been there man.

Also when I open the hood it smelled like something was burning, which leads me to think the timing belt went bad. But im not really sure because i didnt have any tools on me and the time to check. Any other input would be great.
No doubt. Put thread lock on the little screw. Thats a must and for all of you who are reading this and havent done it....DO IT. Take it apart and do it now because the day your late and running the engine hard it will let loose and screw your day.
Its not the timing belt just go to the car with a new rotor and screw pissibly a new cap. Under that cap is a lot of voltage now think about that not being directed to the plugs....it was just sparking in the cap and making that burnt smell. Trust me.

Ok so I went and fixed the rotor and it still wont start!!!! Put in new spark plugs and wires and still no dice. Just ordered a new coil but wont be here till tomorrow. Any info on as to why it still wont start???
Ok my setup is a jdm d15b. Basically stock. I replaced the Cap, rotor, coil, plug wires and plugs and still nothing. It has spark and fuel but it will not start. Possibly Ecu gone bad?? When i crank it over it sounds fine but it backfires and what not. Any one know what the prob is?
Oh dear oh dear, sounds exactly like mine.
My dizzy seized which in turn caused the cam belt to skip a few teeth!
I also got that burning smell from under the bonnet
Luckily the d16a9 is non contact so I had a new dizzy and belt fitted and it was all fine.
Worst case scenario is you might have caused some intrnal damage, bent valves etc

Wow I really how that I didnt do any internal damage.. But I guess it could ok because i have a d16a6 i could put in it
. But if any one else has anyother info on what they think it may have caused my prob, help me on. thanks

Check that timing and see what it looks like. DONT TRY TO START IT! If UKJeff is right then you could bend a valve and your looking at a swap. If you have spark, fuel, compression your car should start.....unless timing is off.
I have taken the timing belt off and the belt is in good condition, it didnt look like it jumped timing. But the ignition timing could be off. does anyone think i could have a bad ecu?
I took the timing belt cover off, is what i ment. also we checked the timing and it was ok, now i have to check the ignition timing, but could this being off cause the car not to start?
Your cam gear has lines that should be horizontal matching the top of the head and the crank should be at TDC at that point. So your timing is Ok then....Hmm First I would make certain that there is spark by taking a plug out and putting it against a ground and turn the engine over and see if it sparks. If so a bad ECU is a possibility. You know anyone who might have a good one to swap out? Cars are so crazy! Now another possibility we havent addressed is fuel. Are you sure that your getting fuel? Does the fuel pump prime when you turn the key to the "ON" position (not start)? fuel, spark, compression, timing is all that is needed for any engine to run.
