For general cruising around and not racing at all, I preferred rolling on 14inchers from Walmart....was a softer ride too.

They weren't exceptional but I never got stuck in the pretty deep stuff.

Compared to the 15inchers Michelin Pilot winters I am still using, they obviously weren't as good, but they were cheap and I never really saw a point in driving like a man or woman possessed when there's snow or even rain on the ground.

FWIW, anybody can pretty much justify going for the best or even the cheapest snow tire as in my case, I learned my lesson sliding head on into a stop sign....(yay for summer tires ) damage caused was more than a set of tires (front lip pwned, bumper cover/ paint, wheels undertray misc. from hopping curb)

Not to mention my snowies literally last for over 5yrs, as they are only in use for about 4 months outta the entire year at best.

most FWD inherently are good in the snow with a set of dedicated tires

Exactly. My beater EG w/ generic skinny 13" snows is more competent in the snow than my Si w/ 15" Alpin Pilots was.

Skinny snows and FWD are 90% as competent as an SUV IMHO. I pull through the nastiest stuff in that car...

I went with a set of 14' steel wheels and Dunlop Graspic's from TireRack - the price was very affordable.

Should do much better in the NY Snow than the 16" BFG summer rated tires I have on now.
