Weight savings, it weights about 1/3 less than stainless steel!

the weight savings i understand, but to my knowledge, aluminium wouldn't be able wo tolerate the high exhaust temperatures

I know this is going to sound rediculous, but is it possible to make an exhaust, albeit a 5 minute lasting one, out of aluminum soda cans? Wouldn't that be the thinnest and lightest and also most fragile? And slightly difficult to weld? I just finished a Coke and got to thinking.....maybe i should just drink another...mmmmm cola.

I'm guessing that if you start after the catalytic area (or downpipe) that the exhaust will have cooled enough to be safe for aluminum? Says Aluminum melts at ~1200*F, so I guess if it gets down to 700-800*F your OK?

The thing is aluminum disipates heat so rapidly, you could have 1200 F exhaust temps and not melt the aluminum. Unless its on a long highway type pull, I feel aluminum is fine.

Aluminum exhaust = Weight of titanium exhausts (roughly within 1 lb) and price of stainless exhaust

Somewhat if i ever get the free time and drink enough sodas in the next summer or over the next few months i may attempt this just for *****-n-grins. I've seen people butt weld the bottom of soda cans together so its not physically impossible to weld.

ahh gotcha. i just remember back to a thread here where people were pointing out that the sides were the same thickness as the stamped bottom part. I've heard of expert NASA welders welding together the foil off the back of a gum wrapper...buy anyhow i was just entertaining the thought.
