I am currently goung to swap in zc dohc in my 88 crx si and i thrink that people out ther in cali have done it but i can't find any particular answers on this. If you ve done thiks swap and passed let me know how you did it.

I heard something about someone getting one BAR'd but I have never seen it. And to Cali it is an illegal swap. but who knows maybe you can get it legal.
I heard from someone a few days ago saying that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is trying to pass a new swapping law stating that you can put any engine in your car but it still has to be newer and it has to be the same make. So that mean we can swap in B20 and still be legal. But i really doubt that it is true, the guy could have been lying.

There was a string a couple months ago by a guy that was working with his local Referee to pass his ZC swap, but it was only a "work in progress"!
It did sound like he wasn't getting "totally negative" feed-back from the officials, but nothing (as far as I know) was finalized.
As for the law changing and being able to swap a B20 into a "car", I highly doubt it!!!!! It would be nice for us, but would really open up what could be swapped into a domestic car. Think about big block chevy engines!!! They have been a "truck only" thing since about the mid 70's. Oh God, I'd almost be willing build a domestic just to have that much torque. (my last project car was a 64 Chevelle 2 door wagon)

yeah I've been looking at the california state website and it says that you can replace your engine with a japanese one if it is functionally identical. which i guess means that the sohc is but the dohc isn't. I called a tech at the dep of consumer affairs and he says that if i had a jdm engine in my car it would be considered a "gray vehicle" which means it is considered an imported vehicle at that point. but on the website it says that they inspect those and certify them. so I don't know. Maybe if I do it they'll have no choice but to let me go with it.?

I've seen many people pass with their JDM motor. I pass with my D15B a couple month ago but it really depends on the smog station. To pass it legally, you have to visit the local Ref smog station to pass the visual and the actual test. The local ref station near my house was cool so I pretty much pass by passing the test. The dude didn't really care about the visual.
Someone had asked on a thread a few days ago about smogging a SOHC ZC and had stated he had problems with the block stamping passing visual. Maybe it's just the backwater test-only station jockeys in my area, but I passed visual (even with my no-name non CARB exempt intake) and sniffer without even a second glance from the tech...like someone ^^^ said it just depends on the tech being knowledgable or not.
I'd imagine if I got away with mine, a stock looking DOHC ZC swap (stock airbox, header, etc), meaning nothing to raise an eyebrow, would probably not get a second thought from an unknowledgable tech, regardless of whether or not it's street legal.

The link to "superhonda.com" was the one I was thinking about.
Key to the whole thing is that even though the referee was willing to work with him, he never did get it through bar and recieve a sticker!

The key thing to a DOHC ZC setup is finding a US equivalent that they can point to for proper routing of lines, CO output and etc. If they cannot find one, then no, it will not pass. That is why, even a B16 1st gen can pass, if it at least meets Del Sol DOHC setup and emissions.
Hardest thing is trying to convince anyone what the ZC is really and equivalent for, at least in Cali. That's also why the SOHC ZC (non-VTEC) has a hard time too, it is mechanically the same as an A6 and theoretically should pass, so you get a half/half answer.
They need to be able to document and establish a pattern to follow for the same situation, guidelines if you will. That is what's hard. There's documentation for the other stuff, so that's easy.
Maybe - and this is a big maybe, and will require some work on your part, if you can go through engine specs, diagrams from Honda, and have printouts ready - you can help the ref establish how this engine should pass based on mechanical similarities. Again a BIG maybe.
Tyson - I've been reasearching, lol.

Have and SOHC ZC (non-vtec) swap and I got it BAR'd easily (hardest part was waiting the 3 weeks or so for the paperwork to go through). As for the DOHC, I was going for that swap but strayed away because apparently there is no newer U.S. equivalent.
YES!! I went down today to the ref and this is what he told me.
I can use a jdm zc dohc if I just use the block. I have to have a few items from a d16a1 which came out of 86-89 tegs. I have a 88 crx si so all the exterior epuipment has to be from a d16a1 from either a 88 or 89 teg.
he mentioned of the top of his head what I would need from that engine.
ECU
Emission Equipment (cali)
and possibly the wiring from a teg too but he wasn't too sure.
Basically though they would test it like motor from an 88 or 89 teg. so it would have to pass the visual the same way those engines would. I probably technically need a teg intake and exhaust but I think they are very similar and it seems from talking to this guy that as long as he can basically test it like a teg engine I wont have to change everything. I'll have to look for a parts list from a 88-89 teg and a vacuum diagram etc...etc...
SO...... If you want to put a dohc zc in your rex or any other 89 or older car YOU CAN.
Now I know some refs are more strict than others so I dont know if you could get every ref too work with you. I live in Huntington Beach and the guy I talked to was at the Goldenwest College location on Goldenwest St. in HB. He seemed like a real cool guy that knew his stuff and seemed more than willing to work with me down the road if I was cooperative with what they needed to pass it.
Since I don't need to smog my car for another year and a half Iv'e got plenty of time to scower the junkyard for parts from a teg. By the time smog rolls around I should be set. So I am going to go ahead and get the dohc zc installed now.
It sure was a hassle but it was well worth it cause now I can upgrade my engine without having to spend $2000 for a b16a1.
oh and by the way for those of you looking to swap in other jdm engines it is possible as long as there is a CA counterpart engine you can use peripherals from.

if you use the D16a1 header onto a jdm zc motor it will sit right but the outlet of the exhaust(head to header) won't mate up with the inlet of the header. learned that like 4 hours ago helping my friend here in hawaii to pass emmissions in california( he is moving there)
Correct, you need the d16a1 parts to make this legal. And if the crx/civic is not 88 or 89, then your outta luck. You have to have a eng thats equal or newer in the car, the eng cant be older than the car. But ya, use the d16a1 manifolds, ecu, and other emissions crap and you SHOULD be good to go. I did not read the above, kinda busy, so if this is repeating same info, sorry...
