Type S Swap
Done quite a few searches...not finding what I need...So help me out if you can...
Over the past few days I've been ponderig doing a Type S swap when I get a prelude...
However...it seems that since the only Prelude released in the U.S. with the ATTS was the SH model and that I would need that model to drop the Type S into. I know very well that I can just get an SH and get a better intake, header, exhaust, pistons, etc... (all the "better" attributes of the Type S motor that was released in Japan) but I kind of like the idea of the Type S motor.
The Deal...
I am currently looking at a
1998 Base model Prelude with the JDM H22a for 7k...clean car, clean engine swap, 151k miles on the chasssis approx. 55k on the engine.
or
1997 Type SH Prelude for 3k. The engine has a miss and may or may not be fixable but...it is the stock motor and has over 200k miles on it.
Would it be better to just go with the first option and be happy with the JDM H22a or invest in the chassis and buy the Type S to drop in (which would provide me with the all-lovable ATTS).
Not sure I worded any of this in an understandable way...if you have any questions pertaining to this post please feel free to ask...
And for any of you that are wondering...
Yes, I am new to this and No, I don't (unlike some newcomers) know everything (or much of anything for that matter ;-)). I have done a good deal of looking. I do believe that I read somewhere that the Type S will fit pretty well into the Base Model but I can't seem to find that page now...
Anyway, thoughts and comments are appreciated...flaming is not. ;-)

There are 2 versions of the Type-s, the SiR and the regular Type-S version.
SiR has a LSD w/ 11.1compression
ATTS, has ATTS w/ 11.1 compresson
What you need to think of is what do you want to do. If you leave it near stock and just plan on doing bolt on upgrades then the SH/Type-S w/ atts swap would be fun, if you plan on big power just get the base / Type-SiR swap for the LSD. Either way both would be fun cars to drive.

I would suggest rebuild too, however I have called several machine shops in my area and none can hone to Honda spec for FRM sleeves. I would rather go with a low mileage JDM swap vs a motor that will fail when I have it rebuilt due to such a tight spec on the hone. I guess that all has to do with the condition of the SH motor's cylinder walls, if they still have the crosshatch from honda and dont have any gouges then you might be ok without honing, but without a full teardown you will not be able to tell.
I was stuck with the decision to rebuild or buy a Type-S. I thought the power difference would be unnoticable but boy was i wrong. VTEC is loud as fok too. Im very happy with the Type-S.
And it slid in like a loose hooker.

Haha...Thanks for the feedback guys...that last one was kind of what I was expecting...
Yeah, I don't like the idea of that high mileage engine, rebuild or not...
Also, does anyone have any thoughts on hmotorsonline.com? Anyone know if they do good work and are reliable or not? I have been in touch with them a bit but just want a real-world outlook on the place. thanks.
And last but not least...Is the wiring hard to get right? I've never done an engine swap before but I'm confident that I pick up on things fast enough to get it done on my own...just not sure about the wiring...if anything was going to trip me up I think it would be that. Any thoughts or experiences?

everyone that I have heard of and has delt with them loves hmotorsonline, not exactally the cheapers but some of the best quality and customer service you can get
I got my H22 from them

Since you're confident, get the helm's manual and you'll do well with the wiring.
About the 98 Base w/ JDM H22A:
Either previous owner blew the first motor at 100k, or he just really wanted some JDM flair. Gives you an idea into what kind of action that car and the new motor has seen in it's lifetime.
About the 97 SH with screwed up motor:
I think swapping in a Type-S with ATTS would be a great idea. Good for unique points too. Some basic bolt-ons, even better cams, and tuning will give you quite a peppy motor without having to rebuild anything (already hi compression pistons and head is port and polished already).

Alright...I believe we may have come to some sort of decision...hopefully...tired of the waiting game.
If the 97 SH chassis is in good condition we will buy it and fix the motor for the time being...hopefully not spending too much and doing all the work ourselves...
Then a Helms Manual will be ordered and i will begin studying all of the wiring, motor installation steps, etc...
When Christmas break rolls around the Type S will be ordered and the motor install should begin...
Any ideas on how long a motor install should take between me (a highschool senior- know a bit about cars) and my dad (built his own oval track car in HS---wiring wasn't an issue then...looong time ago ;-))

The light goes on and off. I really dont care since it doesnt affect the cars performance, i will be swapping it out with my spare one i had on my old motor then hopefully i wont have to stare at the stinking ATTS light.
It took me about a day and a half to remove my old motor, install a new timming belt, water pump, thermostat on the Type-S and then drop it in the car. I took my sweet time doing it to make sure i didnt mix or screw anything up, plus i did it all by my self..CAUSE IM THE FOOKIN MAN!

That's exactly what I wanted to hear...So I'm figuring that with at least a week of me working non-stop and my dad and some others helping when they can I can get the thing done...Does that sound un-reasonable?

A week is plenty of time, specially when you got others helping. Just try to do as much maintanace/care work on the Type-S before you drop it in.
And dont wait man, buy it NOW! Heres a teaser of what it will look like when its home:
