Default Possibly buying a 1yr warranty on a Lude for $900. Advice?

I found a cool 98 base Prelude with 150k on it. It has the basic bolt ons. Sounds really great. The body kit is the only thing I don't like about it. I could easily get the stock one put on for small amount. They are selling the car at 5300. With a 1 year warranty for 6000. To me, that sounds good. But what kind of things should I know that they probley aren't telling me? Anyway, the car drives nice and is fast, the dealer drove it up to 100mph and did some really fast corners in it with me. No rust. The condition is that of a 5300 car, so thats what to expect. 1 year warranty though would make the 6k investment worth while though maybe?

What are your experiences with warrantys when buying used cars?

i would really check into that car if i were you. most people here will tell you not to buy a modded car due to that fact it could have been horse beat all the time. there could be alot of problems, there could even be no problems but really check into it first

2x

if it's modded. expect it to have been beaten the expletive out of. i mean.. why else would you mod a car but to go fast? first and foremost if you are truly interested in buying the car. get the vin. and look up carfax. that'll tell you a lot. im a bit hesitant hearing from the fact that it's an 150k engine. i just bought my 98 lude with 170k- stock evertyhing - for 6k and the engine crapped out on me a few days ago. now im probably buying a new engine. my advice would be to read the fine print of that warranty. what does it cover? because expect to run into problems. in all honesty. i wouldn't buy the car soley on the fact that you don't know how bad/hard it's been driven. good luck!

Even if the the Prelude was beat on, with the warranty if anything went wrong it would be covered. Right now, I can vouch for the car being in great mechanical condition. A very strong engine, me and the dealer took the car to its limits on a back round through twistys and straights. He easily took it to 100mph, and then burst through the corners like nothing. Solid ride for a 150,000 mile car.

Agreed, When my brother bought his 3000gt, everything looked great. As time when on...about a year later S*** hit the fan. well almost lol. He ended up paying another $1500 in repairs. Dealers can somtimes sell time bombs. I fell that they know somthing is up. I would get the whole car inspected before buyn it. Other than that, pretty good deal. Show us some pics when you get it

if u do get the car, def get the warrenty. and really look at it. i bought my 93 back in 99. it had no mods on it and ran really strong when i bought it. bought the warenty with it.

ended up getting a new engine a month later, installed by honda free. then a new tranny a few months later for free, free alternator at some point...and it was a m2b4 tranny they put in and didnt even realize it! thank god for that warrenty i bought!

yea. Think of how many times it's been doing that "wild ride". If find a stock one with less miles.

Shizza if I were you I'd buy it for 6 with that warrenty, loosen the timing belt blow your head. That way you can get a rebuilt engine, and fresh timing belt and water pump. Man I'm a dirty dog, but i know someone was thinking this.

Well come on, He bought a Mitsubishi....that's a no no. Of course it will break down even if it was the best condition. Old DSM =

Mitsubishi isn't even japanese. (not DSM) anyway.

GTO is also not such a great car. Neither is the Nissan Fairlady 300.

HONDA for life, until i can afford an Italian car.

[b]Don't Buy that Prelude. 98 for $6000? really? I believe the resale value for 97 prelude is average at $7,000 +. Clean title, 90-150k miles. That's what i've seen they go for. So $5,300 is quite low and $6k for 1 yaer warrantee? Hmm...Fishy..Salvaged? Accident? Carfax it. (pay someone with carfax like $3-5 bucks and they'll look it up for ya. (cuzz carfax is good for 1 year if you get it). I say,

1. chassis - Frame check (cuzz you can aways replace engine, but bent chassis (nope!) Check the front end fenders, fender frame, and where the whole front end connects to the chassis, if you see discoloration or obvious bends, wrinkles, then it's bad.

2. Suspension- CV boots, arms. struts, etc.

3. Of course.....Engine- unusual noises...abnormally loud, rattling like a marble is jumping around in the valve cover = Valves are off. IDLING, smooth, or not, i believe 800-850 RMP (Ave.) for ludes..is good. +) (-) 50

4. fluids!!!!!!!: open up the resevoirs= power steering, break, Dip stick check, Radiator car (do not open when hot) & RAD resevoir.. Check to see any dark brown/even black color. If the powerSteer/break fluid= looks like lipton ice tea and has a viscosity (thinkness ) a little like cooking oil you're good. If looks like Caramel or Fudge and thin as water =BAD.

5. Test Drive and take a little hard turn, (steering check). GO ON FREEWAY, to test out steering wheel alignment. Drive on a straight freeway let the steering play around...see if you get an offset.

6. Bargain as hell, look like it ain't SH** bring a few to Bad mouth it, Make sure the Seller Guarrantees (smog check) (in CA). (if it's Modified...you will not be able to get it smogged in CA (well you can for $150-200.) Make sure if you have to smog..IT's the law here in CA , the Seller is solely responsible for SMOG when selling a car.

7. Tell that guy or dealership, to Lower the price...let's say $6000 ...write it as...$1,500 bucks so save when you pay .0825% on tax/ registration. (many used cars i bought, the sellers know "the unwritten rule" of reducing the price to save on registration. <b/> It doesn't hurt them and you gain. Screw the DMV.

8. GET EVERYTHING IN WRITTING!!!!!!!!!!!! WARRANTEE?

CREATE YOUR OWN WARRANTEE, TYPE IT UP AND HAVE THE DUDE SIGN IT IN ADDITION TO HIS CONTRACT. " I JOHN SMITH SOLD JOHNNY TRAN ......98 PRELUDE AND WARRANTEE IT AGAINS ENGINE, TRANSMISSION, ETC. FOR 1 YEAR...EXCLUDING RACING...DRIVE BY SHOOTING....(YOU GET the point)
