Default Low compression on cylinder 4, possible burnt valve. need some advice and insight PLEASE!

okay so a week ago i was driving down I5 from school and my engine light turns on.
checked it out at autozone.
popped up as cylinder 3 misfiring.
figured it was some ghetto cheap plugs/wires/dizzy cap/rotor arm the shop gave me when i took it in for fixing a few months back.
i drove it friday night again on I5 and the engine light started blinking rather than staying constantly on.
i noticed bogging and hestitation.
finally made it to the exit and when i started in first gear there was major bogging.
the whole ride from there i was just preparing myself for my car to die.
made it home.. phew.. she's a warrior.
got AAA and the shop on the fone and i had my car towed to the shop today.

i just gave them a call and they told me that cylinder 4 has low compression possibly caused by a burnt valve? they said they could repair it or i could look into a new engine. when the tech said that it made it sound like the repair bill is going to cost me both my *********.

i need some experienced insight here! any input appreciated! thanks in advanced.

- mike.

98 with 172k - mostly freeway mileage.
rebuild my engine?
is it really that bad?
i was hoping that the engine would last me a couple of more years so i could save up to buy a jdm h22a.
i've got only a tenth of that 3200 for the h22a..
my dad is going to tear me a new one.. =]

all you would have to rebuild is the head. you could even cheap out and replace only the burnt valve. personally i would replace all valves. and maybe get a lil port and polish work while the head was off.

honestly im not looking towards upgrading this engine. im waiting to save up for my jdm h22a which i'll prolly try to build. i just wna fix this so it'll run in the meantime. the tech said one of my options was to repair the cylinder. said it'd prolly take a week if i went that route. what do you guys think?

this just in.
i just talked to my brother nd he told me that my dad wanted him to look for some possible engines for me.
said he found one for 1700 so my dad's prolly gona go with that.
man i was hoping i could find a jdm h22a and build off that.
we'll see.
i'll let you guys know.

just fix your H22A4. i had one that required the same thing(bent valves). I now have a JDM H22 , yes it is a little faster, but I am sure you can fix your motor you have now for less than what a JDM engine will cost. I used Ferrea valves and got new rings in my A4 and it was fine. cost about 1000.00 parts and labor.

I think that, since you seem to have limited knowledge but want to learn, you should get the $1700 H22 (if it is in good condition). Then have the shop put it in, this way you have a car to drive. Take the old motor and fix/build that while it is out of the car. It would be a fun project that you dont have to get frustrated with because you will still have a car to drive while you are doing this.

update.

naw the shop's quote was 2200-2500 for repairs.
my engine has 173k with only 160-170 psi in each cept for cylinder 4 with 10.
i figured the longevity of the engine will only go down.
im not tryna mod this engine up or anything because i see it has a waste of money.
i was planning on getting a new engine later on but i guess it seemed to be sooner than i expected.
after i get this swap done i'll start moddin' it.
found an h22a4 for 1700 off jspecautosport and shippin 200.
swap will cost 880 from intec racing.
sick shop
jspec said they guarentee their engines 20-60k.
after i get this engine in.
i'll put my v2 in.
then i'll get type s pistons and see how the sleeves are.
then get my ws2 exhaust.
im ordering my engine this week and get it installed by next week.
updates asap.
thanks.
