Camera owners
I'm wanting to get a new camera soon. And my deciding between Nikon and Canon. Just can't decide which high end model I want. DOn't want to spend no more than 800 bucks. Right now I
m using a Nikon coolpix 4600, which is cool for now. But ready to upgrade soon. Why did you pick the camera you did, and what made you narrow down your choices?
TIA guys

I was looking at the S2 and S3 before. But I think I want to go a little higher than that though. What all do you have for it?

Flip a coin. They're both excellent. The camera is just 1 piece of the puzzle, an extension of your knowledge of the fundamentals IMO.

Canon has the upper edge on Nikon in the digital realm. The difference is small, but its there.
Ask any professional who knows, they will concur.
I suggest a 30D, or a used 20D to save some $$$...

Nikon = good for film, okay for digital... Cheap lenses are better than cheap Canon lenses
Canon = also good for film, better for digital tho! Good lenses cost more but are worth it if you have the $$$

i think you gotta level your skill down. i picked a nikon d50 because i got 2 lenses with it for the price of a canon rebel xt 350d. i was pretty much a noob to the SLR game. but 2 lenses sounded better at the time, so i went with it.
any slr owner will tell you that it's not just the camera body that makes the picture. a lot of it has to do with the lenses too. that's why most people will dish out for expensive lenses. camera bodies go out of date within a year. so it doesn't matter where you start.
i would recommend a used nikon d50 or d70, or if you perfer canon, get a rebel 300d or rebel 350d to start. you can build your skills from there and move on to better camera bodies
you can get these used from 400-600 bucks now

Remember one thing photography is 98% photographer and 2% camera. The camera is just a tool.
I just recently purchased a Nikon D70s and absolutely love it. My advice is go to the store and look at all of them. When you are getting into the level cameras you are looking at it really just comes down to personal preference.
The reason I ultimately choose the D70s is because it is the one that felt the best to me. The Canons felt a little cheap IMO, but dont get me wrong they are great cameras.
Check out this website, he has a ton of very valuable information on it... Ken Rockwell
If I were you I would be looking at either the Nikon D70s or the Canon Rebel. There are two new versions out now but they are a little bit out of your price range. If I were to do it again I would most likely get the Nikon D80.
