Default Ti vs Oem retainers

I was wondering how many people are running aftermarket valve springs with stock oem retainers on a B-series? I heard that stock retainers would snap with really hard springs. Anyone can verified this? I really don't care about the benefits on having lighter Ti retainers. I drive my car too much worry about the Ti retainers thinning out. And yes I'm too lazy for me to pull the valvecover every 7,500 to 10,000 miles to inspect them. I can put 5,000 to 7,000 every 3-4 months. So every about year I would have to replace them. I was wondering what valve springs also are you guys running with oem retainer? Portflow, RM, Skunk 2, Toda, Crower, ect. Thanks

Many aftermarket springs won't work with oem retainers. If you worried about ti longevity then have them coated.DLC (diamond like coating) is a good choice.Buffing the ends of the springs will help a lot also.

You mean by smoothing the end spring out?

Just to be specific that I heard that the toda valve springs will worked and have worked with oem retainers with no problems. Is this true?

Yes. It's a common practice done by engine builders to remove sharp edges throughout the motor.

Yes I know that. But has anyone used oem retainers on aftermarket springs.

Stay stock, building anything else requires maintainance. And you obviously do not have the time to check things. Or just go JDM.

I'm using ITR outer springs and Portflow inner springs on the intake and exhaust sides, and I use OEM retainers.

I've seen stock retainers crack and split with stock GS-R springs. The lash was in spec and rev limiter was only set to 8200rpm. A lot of miles weren't put on the motor either. It was driven only to fun and race events a few times a month, and it was really only driven hard when drag racing at the track.

Well my retainers are fine after 18K miles with a 8500 rpm rev limiter. So what are you saying?

Best advice ever^

If your not willing to do the little extra maintence required with aftermarket internals....then don't waste your money.

The little extra maintenece I don't mind...It's the worrying about thinning out and changing of retainers on a yearly basis. That would get expensive.

Seriously, if you're really worry about Ti retainers, why don't you just use the stock ITR valve trains.

Currently I'm running stock b16a valve train with type r cams. Before anyone start in on I should upgrade the valve springs. I have been running this setup for nearly 4 years with no problems and through numerous mis shifts at the track. I do have type r valve springs but have not installed them. I asked about aftermarket valve springs with oem retainers because I was thinking about installing my toda valvesprings but worry about ti retainer issues. So I was thinking about using the oem retainers. I ws planing on changing my headgasket to a 2 layer and maybe a gsr head to bring my compression ratio to about 10.9 to 1 and use blox b cams just for alittle more hp.

i have CTR cams with portflow inners, ITR yelow outters on both sides, and i use OEM retainers.. i've had these same valvesprings since 1999 in my car. I've had no problems. I did have problems with portflow ti retainers, but now that i'm using oem. alls been good so far.

I'm plannning to upgrade cams to BC4, and right now i'm prolly going to stick with the same valvetrain. No one can gurantee any retainer will last. oem or not. honestly, i think changing Ti retainers once a year is prolly the safest bet you can go with. just do it when you change your timing belt. which should be around once a year if you race alot anyways.

Ti is not worth the cost if you are not going to regularly inspect them.

I have used my Ti retainers for about 5yrs. now. I pulled the head a couple of times due to bent valves and a piston melting. But you don't have to check them every 5-7k miles.

Stock will work with aftermarket springs but why use stock, when a good ti. retainer will not cost verry much and the reliabillity is good.

Well because appearantly the Ti retainers tend to wear out in a very short time. Thats great that yours lasted so long but many people on this board seem to have less luck....

bump

OEM is reliable, just dont use crazy cams and rpm that strain the retainer and spring

BTW, even if you want OEM, get a new or newer set.
