Default vtec question

is it normal for vehicle to blow a little bit of black soot when vtec has engaged? i have searching around and i have heard that while vtec has engaged, mixture goes to a full rich (100%) condition, causing the black soot. Is this true?

89 CRX with d16z6 engine 151xxx KM on the engine. could also use a tune-up, original wires, cap and rotor, and o2 sensor, worn plugs.

it is a little normal because the ecu will dump more fuel when vtec kicks to check black smoke means you are running rich anyway and thats better than lean

yes, converted from obd-0 to obd-1

black soot @ 6000+ rpm under hard acceleration.

and another question, the distributor rotor is held on by a screw/bolt, and seems very difficult to remove. I almost stripped it with a philips, any suggstions?

Try an Impact Screwdriver. Buy one, it's a great tool. You use a hammer with it. Best hand tool I've used.
