Default how do I fix my shitty sounding exhaust?

I made the mistake awhile back of purchasing one of those Tsudo extreme cat-back exhaust systems off of ebay. The can in the back hung way to low and was smacking on everything, and it had a 4.5" tip which looked horrible. Don't ask me why I bought it, I'm still smacking myself over the purchase. The exhaust claims its 2.5" but I measured it to be 2.25" inside diameter. I eventually want to run a HMT setup so thats why I wanted 2.5".

I purchased a magnaflow 5"x8"x20" oval for the back and yesterday me and my friend welded it up, along with chopping off the tip and just putting a piece of 2.5" piping for the outlet out the back. I also chopped the ends off the cat and made a testpipe with some extra 2.5" pipe we had. I had alittle bit of exhaust rattle before so I made the testpipe .5" longer than the cat to try to make the fit tighter.

Now my exhaust sounds like ***. It sounds nice at low throttle, but mid to high throttle it sounds like someone is shacking a coffee can full of ball bearings inside my exhaust. This only happens from 2.5-3.5k and 4.5k and up RPMs. Engine breaking and part throttle sound nice and quiet and deep, but as soon as I put my foot in it if I am in either of those RPM ranges my car sounds rediculous.

The only thing I can think to do is to chop the existing very small resonator out and put a cherry bomb in its place. What else can I do? Its embarrasing to drive my car right now. HELP!

just to clarify, I have a sohc zc, megan header to 2.5" testpipe, 2.5" tsudo catback cut right after the bend to the muffler then a 2.5" magnaflow oval, then the stock tsudo 90 degree bend toward the back then a 2.5" tip in place of the 4.5" tip. My car had alittle bit if exhaust rattle before but now its horrible. Thanks for the help in advance.

What you need is a good quality, good size resonator. That "rattling" sound is whats known as "rasp" it is resonation. The resonator in the tsudo is really small and not doing its job.

You think a good long cherry bomb would be sufficient? There is a nice straight section right after the testpipe I know I could fit one in.

cherry bombs are mufflers, mufflers make it quieter, but what you need is a resonater to get rid of the rasp. Cats also do a good job of eliminating rasp (but you dont want that) which is why your exhaust is SO bad, if it had a cat it probably would sound decent but without one you need a serious resonator.

i have two resonators on my car and without a muffler it sounds pretty good but yes you need like a 24'' resonator at least

You sure its not a small hole in the exhaust? Is it a popping noise at all? Otherwise you will need a muffler to quiet it down some. When I bought mine the dude had no cat and a 3" pipe cuz he was going to run turbo. That **** was so loud I was scared to drive it cuz I didn't want the popo to bust me for no cat. I put a cat on it and a small resonator on it before the muffler and its perfect now.

Some options:

- install the turbocharger
- put the cat back on
- weld in more and/or larger resonator(s)

Did anyone miss this part?

If you're still using the muffler that was part of the system that got "smacked around"....Im thinking your muffler is in not so good of shape.

You get what you pay for...buy a better exhaust.

First thing is you should put a cat back on the car. If it makes you feel like it works better than get a high flow cat. There is no need to pollute the air more than it already is. They do not restrict flow as much as people like to make it out to be(as they are a straight through design just like resonators, in other words it will work like a cat and get rid of the rasp) and besides that, yes, get a nice long resonator(which is a style of a muffler for whoever said that they were different, it is a straight through design muffler, many american muscle cars use cherry bombs and such like the dynomax race bullet for a muffler) and it will give it that nice low deep tone but will also quiet the car too, the longer then better sounding usually. Will fix up the sound real nice.

Apparently you missed the part where he explained that he replaced the Tsudo muffler with a Magnaflow piece.

ok so i missed the part about the muffler...big effin deal...

I had a thermal cat back a few years back, and when it was new...it was awsome. Over the course of a few months, It took a shot or two to the resonator and piping. Mind you, the muffler was perfect, but now the whole thing sounded like ****....all loud and what not.

My point is, if the piping or resonator is damaged, that may be whats making it so loud. Putting the cat back on may make a difference.

Save up the $500 and buy a decent exhaust, instead of dealing with this headache...you won't regret it.

I guess you aint married, trying to get my wife to pawn off on the 220$ it costed for this shitpile exhaust in the first place was hard enough. My wife hates my car so getting her to let me spend money on it is a bitch.

Me and my friend are gonna cut out the resonator thats in there now and put in a cherry bomb and see how that goes. I dont have any exhaust leaks so thats not the issue, the sound im hearing is coming from the back of the car not from under it.

I should have just saved the money for a good exhaust, now with all the money im spending to fix this one Im already almost to 350$. Lesson learned.
