DIY HID questions
I am looking to do this conversion in the near future on my '97 EX Coupe
I am planning on retrofitting projectors and have a few questions:
1. Is it ok to use the stock headlight, (this is with respect to the lense) I understand the whole point of retrofit is to put projectors into a housing that does not have OEM HID's. To elaborate do I need a TYC(i think this is the brand) style housing with the very clear lense or will my stock ones work well enough if I buff the crap out of them?
2. How does the HID work with high/low beams...most conversions i see only account for the lowbeam or so it seems( are high beams even neccessary if you have an HID system in this situation?)
3. What brand of ballast/ignitor is reccommended?
4. Also, what projectors have seemed to work the best for those who have converted?...I've found A6 and TSX ones to be pretty common and easily found.
5. Can someone point me towards any DIY's...i think i found one in search but all the pics were red x'ed
6. Finally, I understand that the #K denotes color but is this determined by bulb or projector...pretty sure i remember seein bulb but no 100%...I will most likely be using 4100 4300 or 6000 depending on my mood at the time of purchase...(dont't worry i wont be goin for the purple or anything dumb)
thanks in advance

- If the stock lenses have grooves in them then NO you cannot use them... they will scatter the light essentially making the projectors NOT projectors.
- High/Low function depends on the HID/Stock set up you have... If you get Bi-xenon projector HID's that have a high and low setting then you need to wire them to work... If you get a single function projector (low only) then you need to use the stock highbeam... of course that only works if there IS a stock highbeam left after you fit in the Projector.
In my project I'm prob. going to run high/low HID's (bi xenon) AND a halogen high beam... when the lows are on it will be projectors only... once the highs are on it will be HIGH projector together with the high beam halogens.
- Ballast/Ignitors... just get everything all together.. that's the easiest... get bulbs/ballasts/prjectors all in one. or at least the projectors and the ballast together.
- Projectors I BELIEVE are all just about the same size... so I don't think there is a prefered specific set.

Go to the "university" section... it's got GREAT info... and it REALLY informs you
- I don't really have time to link here... I'll try to remember to through some links up when I get home.
- The temperature/light range is dictated by the bulbs... I can't remember what the ideal range is but I think it's around 4500-6k...
Good Luck
Oh here's my work in progress thread... Unfo. I haven't done ANYTHING else with this project since I posted that thread...

thank for the informative reply...i will definitely check that out when i get a chance...
one more question:
1. how long would you estimate someone with no dremel exp and intermediate mechanical skills to do this conversion

all i have to say is, get another set of headlights if you plan on driving around at night while doing a retrofit because it takes a long time to get things how you want it with no experience. I would say a good few days to get things how you want it.
edit: if you need some HID stuff, I can probably get some for you depending on what you want. I just got some 06 Lexus RX330 headlights complete with ballast and bulbs. It will be posted for sale soon
edit 2: now up for sale

Search EBAY... they're all over there for pretty good prices...
example:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...QrdZ1
I'm not endorsing that particular seller... but that's all hte parts you're looking for.
Also... keep in mind that if your just putting the bi-xenon projectors in place of already existing projectors (like in aftermarket headlight housings) then it COULD be as simple as removing the old projector and installing the new one... then figuring out where to put the ballast.
Here are some links I have on my home machine:

I can't remember since I haven't looked at this project in a while... but most of those you REALLY need to read the ENTIRE thread.

something like this seems to be all i can find as a replacement...i am going to need a set with non-fluted (i believe this is the correct terminology) lenses and all i can find are the crazy looking black housings or even worse crazy lookign chrome ones
at least with this i think i woudl be able to use a halogen high beam as it appears to have two light sources rather than just the one with off center bulbs like oem
has anyone had success finding a different set of headlights or perhaps just simply swapping lenses from an aftermarket set of headlights?

something like that. Search around, find the kind like that that u like, they will all pretty much be like that though. By getting these u can work on ur hid retro and still have lights on ur car
It would be sweet to buy the black housing headlights with the ion lense too while ur at it, i think those look dope.

both of the links you posted wouldnt work...first one is still a fluted lense which scatters the hid projectors rendering the projector part useless...and the seconds i dont think will fit on the 96-98 civics

that def looks very nice...i will most likely go with one of the crazy tyc ones with a black housing and experiment until i get it exactly how i want it...since i am getting new housings it will give me however much time is neccesary to get it done correctly...and i am startin to read the hidplanet info as i am posting this...
thanks for all who helped...but more info is always welcome
