Default Say it isn't so...

So, I had been hearing this ever since I satrted my engine up...

here is a video...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvzB2XtI0Rk

anyone in here wanna confirm what I am thinking? It doesn't do it all the time, I dont wanna say those dreadful words until someone else can confirm...

My h22 has been burning/losing lots of oil. I havent noticed any oil stains, so I assume its being all burned. I havent done a compression test yet, thats my next thing to do. But does this sound like it has a "rod knock"

sorry , i cant view the video here at work, but from what you describe that sounds like rod knock to me sucks man, you should get a oil pressure gauge hook it up to see what kind of pressure ur getting at various RPM's

that sounds like extremely loose valves...AND the bottom end is very noisy....rod bearings gone bad. needs a full rebuild

don't know, bought it from h-t memeber Ballin H22 Ek...

said it ran perfectly fine when he pulled it. I would assume its got over 100k miles, but since Ive swapped, I would say Ive driven it 150-200 miles tops. Things kept going wrong...

what do you mean loose valves? Ive heard of having to adjust them, but them never being loose...

Yea the valves dont get loose unless you royally hose a valve adjustment. They tighten as you go, hence if you go too long without a valve adjustment they tighten up too much and mess up the valve seals.

It kinda sounds like you may need a valve adjustment, esp since you said it happens intermittantly. Does it happen when the engine is hot or cold or will it just randomly start happening?

well, you can hear that it does it every now and then. But I just had to move my car, and I get in, start it up, and rev it to about 3k RPM, and as the RPM increase, so does the knocking sound. I think its 99% a rod knock. I am just in shock right now.

Is it going to be a rebuild or a build?

well, ive got a spare f22 laying around. my initial thought was to do a full build, but going to do a mild build. looking for somewhere around 225 whp, N/A. so, ill do an f22 rod/crank swap. And some other stuff. Not just sure what parts I want to do.

Look for my build thread in the next month. I have never built an engine before, so this is going to be my first.

Not 100% sure but that really sounds like a rod knock to me. That sucks man. I remember when we dropped that motor in forever ago and you still can't drive it. I never thought it would happen but someone actually has a car that has more problems than mine. Sorry again man.

Yeah. I have driven this car a total of maybe 200 miles since I got it back in April. But, ya live and learn. Im pretty sure its a rod knocking...

oh well...I think I am gonna pull it and start tearing it down sometime next month. There are some other things I wanna do. Relocate battery to the trunk, wire tuck. Convert to a manual steering rack, etc. All easier things to do with engine out of the car

i would check the valves first. it sounded A LOT like mine and mine were loose... (misshifted) and i took it in... they did a compression test and everything checked out... they said i just "knocked them loose" and i dont see how knocking them loose couldnt damage them... but she runs fine now

Out of curiosity, how much do valve adjustments usually go for?

free when you do them yourself

but isnt that fact that the knocking sound gets faster as the RPM's increase, isn't that a dead giveaway its the rod knocking and not the valves?

Then do tell how to do it. I am still learning and willing to learn more.

yup, valve adjustment and she runs like normal.

valvetrain noise got faster and louder as rpms went up for me.. its kinda hard to tell from the video. my car has never had a rod knock so i cant compare the 2 sounds. i was just sayin his sounded like mine. i dont see any harm in checkin the valves tho unless someone FOR SURE can say its the rods.

excellent DIY by shakes. Done on an h22. The setting for the valve lash may be different, but the procedure should be the same
