Default Steering Column has play in it...

My steering column has play it it. i have a momo steering wheel w/ the hub adapter and i can easily move the steering wheel up and down and left and right. its like checking for a bad wheel bearing and i think it might be the same case with the steering column. I know that they have upper and lower bearings and i think my upper bearing is toast. I wanted to know if any of you have ever experienced this and is it easy to take apart and replace. I have removed the steering wheel itself and impacted the nut that goes in between and still no luck.

is your steering wheel tight at all of the bolting positions? there's a total of 5 I believe. One in the middle of your column down above the pedals, and then two sets of 2 right underneath your dashboard. Check to make sure the bolts/nuts at all those positions are tight. They are all 12mm if I remember correctly.

bump cuz i got the same issue, my steering wheel shake at high speeds and when braking, i got all new balljoints upper and lower, inner and outer tie rods and a new steering rack. feels like there is play up and down in the steering wheel when it is locked in any position. plus when i rock the wheel back and forth i can hear a sound comming from the lower part of the colum area. also sometimes when i'm driving the steering wheel feels wavy.
gonna check the mouting bolts under the dash tomorrow.
anyone else got any other ideas?

Check the universal joint on the bottom of the column.

you have the column adjuster locked, right?

check that the wheel nut is tight and that the adapter is on there right. if so, continue.

if it is moving up and down in the plane of the wheel (like a wheel bearing) it is probably the bolts un the middle of it that hold it to the firewall extension and the brace. also check that the brace is there/bolted.

the u-joints will allow movement forward and aft, like pulling it into your chest. if unchecked, they will also start to loose their teeth, which will give more play in the turning of the wheel, and eventually strip all the way out and leave you with a car that doesn't turn. it is especially fun when this happens while you are moving.

No, there wouldn't be any additional play.

If you took the valve body off there will be, the bearing sleeve with the pin in it will be free to move around, i've seen this happen before, but that's besides the point since he still has PS.
